DNP Program Admission Information

Admission Requirements
Applications for admission are reviewed once each year. Priority admission deadline is July 21, 2008.

  • Be a graduate of a masters nursing program that is fully accredited by the appropriate regional accrediting agencies and the NLNAC (National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission) and/or CCNE (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education).
  • Hold a masters degree in an advanced nursing role such as: nurse practioner, clinical nurse specialist or nursing service administration.
  • Hold a current license as a registered nurse in Ohio.
  • Demonstrate capacity for doctoral study. A blended cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for all undergraduate and graduate course work.
  • Have taken or are scheduled to take the GRE within the last 5 years.
  • Possess the ability to articulate one's professional goals and express oneself clearly as evidenced by the admission essay. Congruence of the applicant's goals with the objectives and resources of the Otterbein College Department of Nursing.
  • Have one year full time, or part time equivalent, professional nursing work experience at the masters level.
  • Possess a current resume.
  • Produce recommendations from individuals who can support the applicant's potential for academic success and function in the DNP role.
Application for Admission Procedure
  1. Applications for admission are reviewed once each year. Priority admission deadline for Fall 2008 class is July 21, 2008. If you are applying for the session starting in Fall 2008, complete a paper application. If you are applying for Fall 2009 admission you may apply online or submit a paper application. Application deadline for Fall 2009 is March 1, 2009.
  2. Provide a current Ohio RN license number on the application form. Graduate and Continuing Studies will verify current Ohio RN licensure on the Ohio Board of Nursing website and a copy of the license verification will be added to the candidate's file.
  3. Send official transcripts from all previous colleges or universities attended to Graduate and Continuing Studies.
  4. Submit 2 recommendation forms from individuals who can provide support for the candidate's potential for academic success and for performance in the DNP role. One must be from a nursing professor and the other from the applicant's current employer. Otterbein College reserves the right to contact persons providing recommendations and to acknowledge receipt of recommendations.
  5. Submit a typewritten essay and initial idea for a practice-based project. The essay should summarize: professional background; professional goals that can be achieved through the DNP program; personal contributions that can be made to the nursing program and wider community; and a description of how the practice problem/topic fits the applicant's professional experiences and/or interests.
  6. Submit current GRE score (taken within the last 5 years). See GRE site at www.gre.org.
  7. Submit a copy of your professional resume.
  8. Schedule an interview appointment with the Nursing faculty by calling Sharon Buxton 614-823-1614.
  9. Applications for admission will be reviewed once per year. Priority application deadline is July 21, 2008 for fall entry of the same year. The most qualified applicants will be selected on a space available basis. It may be necessary for some applicants to take additional course work to meet course prerequisites.
