Honors Courses

Freshman and Sophomore Seminars
Freshmen students meet with their peers in Honors sections of Integrative Studies (INST 100, 105, or 110). In the sophomore year, students will take Honors sections for Integrative Studies 270. These first two years create opportunities for students to interact with each other and to develop analytic and writing skills. The increased rigor in these courses is achieved through more diverse reading materials, the higher order of learning skills required for projects and writing assignments, and the promotion of peer group activities that place increasing responsibility on students for self-assessment and independent research.

The Junior Year - "The Nature of Inquiry" The Junior Honors Seminar (Honors 305), "The Nature of Inquiry", is a year-long, five credit hour course which begins fall quarter. The faculty for the course come from members of the Honors Committee, and the subject matter reflects the diverse interests of the committee members. The focus of the seminar is the interdisciplinary nature of independent research and inquiry. Students play an important role in contributing materials from their own disciplinary knowledge.

Major goals of this course are to provide students with a sound background for independent research, an understanding of research methodologies from diverse disciplines, an experience of a community of learning, and the advanced development of critical thinking skills. In keeping with these goals, the junior year incorporates training in the use of the most recent library resources and technologies.

The Junior Honors Seminar is graded Pass/Fail. All students who intend to graduate with Honors must register for this course.
