Courses

The Gateway Program is aimed at students who are speakers of other languages and who are new residents in the United States. The three-quarter academic program is designed to help students make the transition from high school to college. It focuses on developing students' English language skills (especially academic writing skills), their math skills, as well as their reading and study skills to prepare them for college-level work in their majors.

Catalog Description: Sequence of English Courses

ESOL 101 Academic English I
The course focuses on fundamental communication skills for academic purposes, both written and oral. Emphasis will be on formal academic writing, as well as critical thinking skills. Students will develop all necessary competencies to successfully undertake their coursework in their major area of study. Acquisition of skills in prewriting, organization, grammar and mechanics, as well as sentence structure. Course is designed for Gateway students.

ESOL 102 Academic English II
A continuation of ESOL 101, the course focuses on intermediate communication skills for academic purposes, both written and oral. Emphasis will be on formal academic writing, as well as critical thinking skills. Students will continue to develop all necessary competencies. Acquisition of intermediate level skills in prewriting, organization, grammar and mechanics, as well as sentence structure. Course is designed for Gateway students. Prereq: ESOL 101.

ESOL 103 Academic English III
A continuation of ESOL 102, the course focuses on advanced communication skills for academic purposes, both written and oral. Emphasis will be on formal academic writing, as well as higher level critical thinking skills. Students will continue to develop all necessary competencies. Acquisition of advanced level skills in prewriting, organization, grammar and mechanics, as well as sentence structure and discourse. Course is designed for Gateway students. Prereq: ESOL 102.
