Department of Life and Health Science

Pre-Professional Health Science Concentration

One way to judge an undergraduate pre-professional program is by the success of its graduates. At Otterbein, we have a placement record in health sciences that would be the envy of almost any school. On the national average, only about 30 percent of medical school applicants are accepted. We have an acceptance rate of about 80 percent. Our pre-dental, veterinary, and optometry students are equally successful.

The American Medical Association's Council on Medical Education recommends that medical students have a "broad, cultural background in the arts, humanities, and social sciences, as well as in the biological and physical sciences." As a pre-medical, pre-dental, pre-veterinary medicine, or pre-optometry student at Otterbein, you will probably major in chemistry, biochemistry, or life science. However, any major field qualifies you for these programs as long as you take at least one year of life science, two years of chemistry, and one year of physics.

You and your faculty advisor will work together to design a course of study which may include advanced classes in vertebrate morphology, embryology, organic chemistry, histology, biochemistry, systems physiology, and genetics. At the same time, our Integrative Studies program will give you a sound liberal arts background.

No college can guarantee that you will be admitted to the professional school you choose, but our record is better than most. We've been successful because our professors give their students the extra guidance and attention they deserve and need to meet the challenge of professional school. We'll give you an education, an experience, and a beginning.
