Faculty Retreat-- Mohican State Lodge
December 6-7, 2007

The theme of this year’s Faculty Retreat is Conversations that Matter: Learning More about Talking to Each Other, and we have invited Dr. Phil Cass to facilitate. Our goals for this Retreat are to provide a setting to (re)learn innovative methodologies for meaningful conversation. Along the way we hope to have conversations that engage us in questions such as:

[1] What binds us together at Otterbein?

[2] What is my contribution? What helps me to feel supported and able to speak openly about what I think Otterbein needs in order to be a stronger learning community?

[3] How can we talk to each other in meaningful and authentic ways that strengthen each other and our community?

[4] How can we engage and shape the future of Otterbein?

Reaching All Our Students: Ensuring Web Accessibility

Guest speaker: Ken Petri, OSU Web Accessibility Center

Principles of accessibility, though originally developed to meet the needs of people with disabilities, benefit all users of electronic media. There are a number of decisions that instructors can make in designing documents for the web and other media (PDF™, Power Point™, video) that increase usability not only for those with motor, visual, auditory, or cognitive disabilities but for all learners.

Ken Petri, Director of Ohio State University's Web Accessibility Center, will give a quick overview of web accessibility, concentrating on general design principles affecting accessibility and discussing the impact accessibility has for learners. He will demonstrate some of the ways people with disabilities access the web, using screen readers and other technologies.

Co-sponsored by Office of Disability Services in the Academic Support Center and the Center for Teaching and Learning

More CATs, Classroom Assessment Techniques

Roush Hall 114
9:00 am - 12:30 pm

CAT Basics 101
9:00—10:00 am

The first hour of the workshop will be a basic introduction to Classroom Assessment Techniques and will recap October’s Common Hour presentation.

Cases of Cattiness...
10:15—11:00 am

During the second part of the workshop, we will “go deeper” by looking at some case studies from colleagues’ work to learn how they used Classroom Assessment Techniques to monitor and give feedback on student thinking, attitudes, or skills in a particular class. We will look at challenges colleagues have faced (and maybe even a fiasco or two), as well as success stories.

Going Deeper: CATs for Your Courses
11:00—12:30 pm

Finally, participants will spend time in small working groups consulting with one another about CATs they can use in a specific course. Bring a syllabus!
