Troy Burton Troy Burton
Troy Burton is a Music Education major with an emphasis in vocal performance. On campus, he is a resident assistant in Dunlap-King Hall and a member of Sigma Delta Phi fraternity. Troy is a member of several honoraries including Delta Omicron music fraternity, Alpha Lambda Delta National Academic Honorary, and Phi Eta Sigma Freshman Academic Honorary. He has served as the student representative and liaison between students and the parent-run organization for the Youth Performing Arts School via Producers, Inc., and he was previously the assistant minister of music at the New Life SDA Church.

Representing the Western Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church, Ramsey Coates earned his B.A. from Earlham College majoring in political science, and he graduated summa cum laude from the Ohio State University College of Law, earning a J. D. degree. Coates served as an associate with Baker & Hostetler in Cleveland, Ohio from 1971 to 1976 before taking a position as an international lawyer with Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Pittsburgh, PA. He has been with Westinghouse since 1976 residing in the Pittsburgh area, except for time spent as Westinghouse Counsel-Europe residing in Brussels, Belgium.

Today, he serves as Senior Vice President and General Counsel to Westinghouse Electric Company LLC, a United States subsidiary recently acquired by Toshiba Corporation of Japan and provides leadership to Westinghouse global legal activities. He is a member of the Finance and Student Life Committees.


William Evans William Evans '56
William Evans received a B.S. in Mathematics from Otterbein and did post-graduate work at both the University of Pittsburgh and The Ohio State University. His first position after college was with Westinghouse Electric where he worked for five years. By 1963 Evans had been recruited by the Battelle Memorial Institute to lead the development of scientific computing for the Korean Institute of Science and Technology. He has worked with several underdeveloped countries on both infrastructure and technical needs. During the last fifteen years of his career with Battelle, he served as Director of Information and Communication Systems with responsibility for establishing and operating Battelle's worldwide information and telecommunication system. A former President of the Otterbein National Alumni Association, he is an At-Large Trustee and is an Officer of the College. He chairs the Governance Committee and serves on the Executive, Investment, and ad hoc Board Enhancement Committees.

Mary Hall earned a B.A. in Sociology from Otterbein, an M.A. degree from Boston University and her Ph.D. from Simmons College School of Social Work. Her current areas of research include the significance of race in clinical practice, the process of change in substance abuse treatment with pregnant women and the legacy of slavery and undoing racism. Hall is an At-Large Trustee from Northampton, MA, where she is a professor and chairperson of the Clinical Research Institute in the School for Social Work at Smith College. She serves on the Academic, Enrollment and Student Life Committees.

Serving as a student trustee, Anna Haller is majoring in Sociology with minors in Deaf Culture and Black Studies. She will graduate in June 2010. On campus, she is a member of Sigma Alpha Tau sorority, an assistant hall director, a tour guide, an orientation leader, a DESIRE Diversity mentor, and has served on several campus committees including the Common Book Committee. Anna was a First Year Experience intern and has served on its task force and planning committee. She is a member of multiple honoraries including Alpha Lambda Delta National Academic Honorary, Phi Eta Sigma Freshman Academic Honorary and Order of Omega Greek Honorary. In 2007, she was awarded Resident of the Year and Outstanding Volunteer of the Year and in 2008 she was honored as Outstanding Second Year Student.

William E. Harrell, Jr. William E. Harrell, Jr.
William "Eddie" Harrell Jr. earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from Otterbein College in 1994 and his master's degree in business administration from Ashland University. He has been president and CEO of the Columbus Urban League since April 2006. Prior to joining the Columbus Urban League, Harrell served as the executive director of I KNOW I CAN and Project GRAD Columbus. Prior to joining I KNOW I CAN, he served on the organization's Board of Directors. He also held various management positions with The Kroger Company. Harrell serves on the Board of Directors for COSI Columbus, Columbus City Schools Education Foundation, and KIPP Central Ohio. Mr. Harrell serves on the Advancement and Finance Committees.

Nicholas Hill Nicholas Hill
Faculty trustee Nicholas Hill is Professor of Art and the former chair of the Department of Art at Otterbein College and a resident of Granville, OH. He teaches drawing, printmaking and painting. Hill received his bachelor's of fine arts degree from Michigan State University and his master's of art and master's of fine arts degrees from the University of Iowa. He has taught at Otterbein for 10 years. His previous teaching positions include Union College in Schenectady, NY, the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, and chairperson of the Art Department at Bethany College in Kansas. Hill has exhibited his work in over 150 national and international juried and invitational exhibitions and is the recipient of an Ohio Arts Council Project Grant; two New York State Council on the Arts Grants; grants from Artists Space/New York City and a grant from the Kansas Arts Council.

Upon completing a B.A. in Chemistry and Biology at Otterbein, Ted Huston earned a degree in medicine from The Ohio State University. Named one of the top cardiologists in the area by Columbus Monthly, Huston's career focused on preventive cardiology at the McConnell Heart Health Center. He is now retired. Serving as a representative of the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church, Huston chairs the Facilities Committee and serves on the Academic and Enrollment Committees.

Joseph Ignat Joseph Ignat
Joseph Ignat serves as managing director of Blackburn Capital, LLC, an investment banking firm with principal offices in Denver, CO. Prior to his service at Blackburn, he served as vice president of American Deposit Corp., an innovative developer of deposit products for banks. Earlier in his career, he was employed with several firms involved in oil and gas exploration, film making and commercial real estate. Ignat serves as board member of Property and Environment Research Center, an environmental economic research organization in Bozeman, Montana and as a trustee, secretary and treasurer of the Independence Institute, and economic research organization in Golden Colorado. He is a former president and trustee of the Nord Family Foundation, a grant making foundation in Amherst, OH; and the former president and current trustee of the Denver Lions Foundation, a grant making foundation in Denver, CO. Ignat earned his bachelor's degree in physics from Otterbein in 1965, his master's degree in business administration from the University of Colorado in 1970 and is a veteran of the United States Navy.

John King earned a B.S. in Biology from Otterbein College. He is a vice president and one of the co-founders of Perot Systems Corporation. He is the member of the Perot Systems' Senior Leadership team that has responsibility for the enterprise quality strategy and direction. King also has responsibility for the organization that supports and maintains the company's corporate systems. As a company co-founder, he acts as an advisor for strategic business relationships between Perot Systems and other service providers.

Before joining Perot Systems, King worked at Electronic Data Systems (EDS) in all areas of the company, from applications development to large-scale program management. For EDS, his last area of responsibility was division management of all business with the United States government. He serves as an At-Large Trustee, chairing the Finance Committee and is a member of the Advancement, Governance and Ad Hoc Compensation Committees.

President Kathy A. Krendl took office July 1, 2009, becoming Otterbein College's 20th president. She received her bachelor's degree in English from Lawrence University (Wisconsin), her master's degree in journalism from The Ohio State University and her doctorate degree in communication from the The University of Michigan. After holding teaching positions at Ohio State, Southern Illinois, and Indiana University, President Krendl joined Ohio University in 1996 as a professor of Telecommunications and dean of the University's Scripps College of Communication. In 2004, she was appointed provost and became responsible for 11 colleges on the University's main campus. In 2007, she was promoted to executive vice president and provost.

Rev. Angela Lewis has a degree in English Education from Langston University, an M.A. in Secondary Administration from the University of Akron and a Masters in Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary. She serves as pastor of the St. Paul United Methodist Church in Cleveland and is a representative from the East Ohio Conference. She serves on the Enrollment and Student Life Committees.

John Magaw earned his B.S.E. from Otterbein College. His career as a civil servant of 40 years has included service to the Ohio Highway Patrol, Director of the U.S. Secret Service (former head of protection for President George H.W. Bush and family), the Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, Deputy Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Undersecretary of the Transportation Security Administration. Magaw is an At-Large Trustee serving on the Facilities and Student Life Committees.

After receiving his B.A. in Social Studies from Otterbein College, Tom Morrison earned a Bachelor of Laws from New York University, then spent four years in the Air Force Judge Advocate General's Corps. Morrison is a partner in the New York City law firm of Patterson Belknap Webb and Tyler LLP. His area of specialty is commercial litigation with an emphasis on advertising, trademark and unfair competition litigation; he regularly represents pharmaceutical, health care and consumer products companies in trials and appeals throughout the country. An At-Large Trustee, he is current Chair of the Board. As such, he is an ex-officio member of all Committees.

A graduate of Otterbein's Adult Degree program, Peggy Ruhlin received a B.A. in Business Administration. She is a principal of Budros, Ruhlin & Roe, Inc., the Columbus, Ohio wealth management firm, with over $1 billion of investments under advisement. She is a Certified Public Accountant (accredited as a Personal Financial Specialist) and a Certified Financial PlannerĀ® certificant. An At-Large Trustee, she chairs the Investment Committee and serves on the Audit and Finance Committees.

Barbara Schaffner is a professor and chairperson of the Otterbein College Department of Nursing. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Cincinnati, she went on to earn her Master's at Indiana University and Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, both in Nursing. She has also earned a Post-Master's Certificate as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner from The Ohio State University. Barbara has worked as a nurse educator since 1981 and a pediatric nurse practitioner since 1996. In 2008, Barbara was awarded Educator of the Year by the Ohio Association of Advanced Practice Nurses, and in 2007, she was honored as Pediatric Nurse Practitioner of the Year by the State of Ohio. She has written multiple publications on pediatric nursing and nursing education and has presented at conference around the world. Barbara has been awarded more than a dozen grants since 2002; her largest of which for Project SHINE: Supporting and Helping Innovative Nursing Education from the Nurse Education Grant Program of the Ohio Board of Nursing ($199,641) in 2007.

Kent Stuckey earned his B.A. in Political Science, Psychology and Music Performance from Otterbein College. He also holds a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Michigan and a Master in Business Administration from The Ohio State University. Stuckey is a founder, CEO and Board Chairman of Internet Transaction Solutions (ITS), an Inc. 500 company. A former General Counsel and Secretary to CompuServe and VP of CompuServe Ventures, he is author of the leading treatise "Internet and Online Law." In addition to numerous other accolades, Stuckey was awarded the "Service Above Self" Award by the Upper Arlington Rotary Club in 2005. He is an At-Large member serving on the Audit and Academic Committees.

Mark Thresher earned his Otterbein B.A. in Business Administration. After a successful career as a CPA with KPMG, Mark went to work for the Nationwide Companies, where he currently serves as President and COO of Nationwide Financial Services, Inc., Nationwide's publicly traded life insurance and retirement savings franchise. He is also a member of the Columbus COSI Advisory Council. Thresher chairs the Audit Committee and serves on the Advancement, Investment and ad hoc Board Enhancement Committees.

Annie Upper '86
Annie Upper, MHt, earned a B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Sociology from Otterbein. She expects to earn her Master's in Psychology from the University of Phoenix in July 2009. She holds a certification from the National Association of Transpersonal Hypnotherapists and is a registered minister through the State of Ohio. Upper is the founder and owner of Gentle Wind, a holistic Center for Conscious Living; co-founder of Donatos Pizza; and founding member of Amethyst Recovery House, Inc. She was the recipient of Amethyst's Purple Heart Award in 2004. Upper has been a member of the Otterbein Alumni Board since 2004.

Alan Waterhouse Alan Waterhouse
Alan Waterhouse served as the first president and CEO of Asteres, Inc., a start-up firm in San Diego which commercialized a system to store and deliver finished prescriptions to consumers in a retail pharmacy. Prior to joining Asteres, Inc., Waterhouse was president of Cardinal Health's Packaging Services division. He came to that position from Pyxis Corporation where he was executive vice president of manufacturing/operations. Before joining Pyxis, Mr. Waterhouse held several senior management positions in manufacturing and operations with General Motors Corporation. Waterhouse's community work includes chairing the annual United Way fund drive for a division of General Motors and devoting a great deal of time to Big Brother/Big Sisters. He received his bachelor's degree in business administration from Otterbein College in 1982 and his master's degree in business administration from Xavier University. He resides in Del Mar, CA.
