Advanced Practice Nurse Educator Concentration:
A 3-Course Sequence

(Offered in Odd Numbered Years)

This concentration will be offered again in Fall 2009.

The nursing profession is facing a shortage of nursing faculty, staff educators and patient educators. Otterbein's graduate nurse Educator Concentration can help you become better prepared and more marketable within the health care arena. The Advanced Practice Nurse Educator Concentration:

  • Prepares you to teach more effectively
  • Is a three-course online sequence (see Computer Requirements for Online Courses)
  • Can be done as part of a master's program or as a post master's
  • Focuses on client/staff education or higher education nursing programs
  • Provides a Certificate of Completion

FALL

NURS 640: Educational Program Development and Evaluation (3 credits)
Examines basic teaching theories, styles, and methods. Focuses on planning, developing, implementing and evaluating educational programs. Utilizing relevant theories and research, students will design selected nursing and/or health related programs, including needs assessment, objectives, content, instructional methods/materials, and evaluation.



WINTER

NURS 641: Client/Staff Education (3 credits)
Examines the advanced nurse educator role functioning as coach and facilitator in client/staff education using the principles for planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating in selected nursing and/or health related programs. Focuses on educational programs for clients (patient/family) and nursing professional development (continuing education, orientation and in-services); and related organizational, political, legal and ethical issues. Includes selected theories/concepts, research, budgeting, marketing, professional certification, documentation, and teaching methods. Prereq: NURS 640

NURS 642: Higher Education Nursing Programs (3 credits)
Examines the advanced nursing faculty role in schools of nursing. Focuses on using the principles of planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating in higher education nursing curriculums and assessing the influences of related organizational, political, legal and ethical issues. Includes selected theories/concepts, research, budgeting, marketing, recruiting, accreditation, professional certification, documentation, and teaching methods for distance education, on-line programming, and clinical teaching. Prereq: NURS 640 (3 hrs/wk)



SPRING

NURS 643: Advanced Practice Nurse Educator Practicum (4 credits)
Participation in this course facilitates the synthesis of nursing and educational theories, concepts and research in performing the advanced role of a nurse educator within selected educational settings. Students will discuss theory and application of teaching/learning principles in a weekly one-hour seminar on-line. Students will be guided by masters or doctorally prepared nurse educator preceptors in selected health care or higher educational settings. Prereq: NURS 640; and either NURS 641 or NURS 642 9 hrs/wk.
