Name one thing you love about Otterbein: I love the sense of community. It's nice to walk across campus and see familiar faces, and even those that are not familiar still offer a smile and a hello as you walk by. What advice do you have for students in their college search? Keep an open mind and explore many different possibilities; but in the end follow your heart. Excluding your current profession, if you could choose any other profession what would it be and why? I would love to own my own business. From the administration to the faculty, students will always feel comfortable in their academic setting as they pursue their career goals. What advice do you have for students in their college search? Enjoy the experience, keep an open mind, do not be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and stay on top of deadlines. A doctor - the other kind - so I could have a different set of useful skills to help people anywhere in the world. Name one thing you love about Otterbein: I love how Otterbein makes me feel at home with the strong sense of community. What advice do you have for students in their college search? Make sure you visit all the schools you are interested in to find which school is the best fit for you. Excluding your current profession, if you could choose any other profession what would it be and why? Photographer. Education: Master of Music, Michigan State University (go green!) Name one thing you love about Otterbein: The warm and welcoming atmosphere. What advice do you have for students in their college search? Make a list of colleges that have the programs you are interested in, decide what your geographic boundaries are, make campus visits, try to get a feeling of "best fit" for you. Excluding your current profession, if you could choose any other profession what would it be and why? I would love to be a full-time music minister at a church so I could conduct choirs, but typically those positions need people with keyboard skills and I have none! Coordinating music and worship to enhance the service and the spoken word is the most gratifying thing I've ever done before I became an admission counselor! ![]() bshoemaker@otterbein.edu Recruitment Territory: I have the pleasure of working with students from Southwest Ohio and all states with the exception of Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Florida, Texas, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania (try saying that five times fast!). Other Responsibilities: I work as the coordinator of our Host & Tour program, President's Scholars Recognition Event, and the HOOT program. I also work with those students looking to take transient classes at Otterbein. Education: Bachelors of Science in Journalism (Public Relations) '00 and a Masters in Education '02 from Ohio University in Athens, OH. Name one thing you love about Otterbein: While I enjoy the sense of community a lot, I would say one of my favorite things about Otterbein is the strong base provided by the liberal arts education. Being able to take a wide variety of classes and find applicability in those classes toward your major, your career and ultimately your life is a great aspect of the liberal arts. What advice do you have for students in their college search? Know yourself more than anything else. You're going to want to beat your head against the wall several times throughout the year, but if you have faith in the process and yourself it's hard to make a bad choice. Excluding your current profession, if you could choose any other profession what would it be and why? My gut tells me the circus, but my fear of clowns would make that somewhat difficult, so I would have to go with my second choice of writing for international travel guidebooks. List the important characteristics you are searching for in a school (ie. specific major, location, etc.) and seek all colleges that fit your criteria. Excluding your current profession, if you could choose any other profession what would it be and why? A wedding or event planner because I enjoy working with people and the constant change, there would never be a dull day! Plus, I like to make people smile! |
