Department of Art Portfolio Review Information
A critical part of pursuing an art degree at Otterbein is faculty review of student artwork. Every artist benefits from this kind of experience and this is why the faculty in the Department of Art at Otterbein require that students who wish to major in art complete a portfolio review before they declare the major, regardless of whether or not they are seeking a talent award.
Suggestions for preparing a portfolio:
- Select approximately 8-12 of your strongest pieces. Quality is more important than quantity.
- Depth in areas of interest may be one focus of the work.
- Consult with art teachers or other professionals and then make your selection of work.
- Slides or photographs will be reviewed if you are unable to bring a portfolio of work.
Art students may explore studio areas of ceramics, computer art, drawing, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture. Building upon a foundation of design, drawing and art history, students develop individualized studio programs. Faculty members work closely with students to build connections between studio interests and broader academic strengths. Practical experiences in the arts are also encouraged. Students may select internships with publishers, graphic design studios, computer art opportunities, art museums and other innovative career avenues. Otterbein has a strong art education program that emphasizes diverse teaching experiences.
Portfolio reviews will begin in January. Please call (800) 488-8144 to arrange your visit.
