Dr. Sean B. Carroll will discuss “Remarkable Creatures: Epic Adventures in the Search for the Origins of Species”. The lecture is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27, in Riley Auditorium in the Battelle Fine Arts Center. It is free and open to the public. Click here to learn more.
Otterbein Professor Named Ohio Poet of the Year
Terry Hermsen, professor of poetry, composition, and literature in the Department of English at Otterbein College, has been named co-Poet of the Year for 2009 for his book The River’s Daughter. Click here to read more.
Life and Earth Sciences Professor Receives Grant Award
Dr. Michael Hoggarth, professor of Life and Earth Sciences, received an award of nearly $31,000 from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for his project: Freshwater Mussel Survey of Lake Erie Refugia. The purpose of this project is to sample probable refugia in Lake Erie for mussels. Drs. Hoggarth and Thomas (of OSU) recently discovered unknown communities of mussels in a marina and in river channels emptying into Lake Erie. The objective of this study is to determine if other such habitats also support mussels.
New Science Center is Completed
Otterbein's new Science Center will welcome students this fall. The $20 million project brings a total of over 96,000 square feet of well-equipped laboratories, technologically advanced classrooms, 2 greenhouses and dedicated research space.
Science for the 21st Century
Otterbein College recently received a renewable grant of $60,000 from the Merck Institute for Science Education to fund a new program for science students called Student Scholars for the 21st Century. The grant will fund four undergraduate research experiences annually, as well as ancillary programs designed to engage all summer research students in an enriched experience and expose them to possible career paths.
