Broadcasting

Photo of students working in the t.v. station control room This program of study qualifies students to seek careers in electronic media, radio-television broadcasting, and/or non-broadcast video or to apply for graduate study in mass communication, electronic media and radio-television broadcasting.

The following are the requirements in the Core Curriculum for a B.A. degree with a major in Broadcasting (at least 180 total hours required for the degree):

Requirements in the major (58 hours or equivalent):

Students must choose one of the following concentrations available in the major:

  1. Media Production concentration
    • MCOM 110 Radio/Audio Production - 5 hours
    • MCOM 120 Fundamentals of Television/Video Production- 5 hours
    • MCOM 261 or JOUR 260 - 5 hrs. (see directly below)
    • MCOM 261 Copywriting for Electronic Media - 5 hours
    • JOUR 260 News Writing and Reporting - 5 hours
    • MCOM 365 or 410 - 5 hrs. (see directly below)
    • MCOM 365 Media Criticism and Audience Analysis - 5 hours
    • MCOM 410 Media Ethics and Regulation - 5 hours
    • One course from MCOM 341-347 - 1 hr.
    • Elective from among ART 151, COMM 335, JOUR 175, and MCOM 130/261/320/360/365/391/410 - 5 hours
  2. Media Studies concentration
    • JOUR 140 Newspaper Practicum (Tan and Cardinal) - 1 hour
    • MCOM 110 or 120 - 5 hours (see below)
    • MCOM 110 Radio/Audio Production - 5 hours
    • MCOM 120 Fundamentals of Television/Video Production - 5 hours
    • MCOM 265 Media and Society - 5 hours
    • MCOM 365 Media Criticism and Audience Analysis - 5 hours
    • MCOM 410 Media Ethics and Regulation - 5 hours
    • Elective from among MCOM 110/120/261/270/320/360/391/490, JOUR 260/360, COMM 215/335, and BADM 300/310 - 5 hours
