Dr. Rebecca Bowman Collection
American Women Authors: 1880-1897
Dr. Bowman's annotated bibliography is unique in that it contains transcribed criticism of American Women Writers between the years 1880-1897. This is vastly different from a traditional annotated bibliography which offers citation information followed by a brief description of the cited work.
The criticism transcribed within Dr. Bowman's Annotated Bibliography comes from two primary magazine sources: The Critic and The Dial, spanning the years 1880-1898, and contains criticism on over 400 American Women Writers. Due to its size, we have limited the online information to a list of authors within the document. On this list you will note a pair of parenthesis follows each author. The parentheses indicate the number of works listed in the original annotated bibliography. A list of these works immediately follows the author's name. However, this does not necessarily mean that each of the listed works has transcribed criticism within the Annotated Bibliography. This is an effort to maintain the integrity of Dr. Bowman's work by simply indicating the information she obtained.
Much of Dr. Bowman's research began on index cards. Within the Collection, there are two groups of index cards: Working index cards and Additional index cards. This is not a classification made by Dr. Bowman. Each set of index cards has information regarding authors, many of whom are included in the Original Author List. But this does not necessarily mean every author within either group of index cards appears on the Original Author List.
Within the Miscellaneous section of the Collection, there are several drafts of Dr. Bowman's academic papers including, "Literary Reception in the 1880's," "The Politics of Aesthices: Literary Reception at the End of the Nineteenth Century," and "The Possessions and Self Possessions of James's Heroines." The drafts include partial and complete handwritten versions, as well as typed versions with edits. If you would like more information about any of these documents, please fill out this e-form. The Archivist will contact you at the earliest convenience.
In addition, the Miscellaneous section of The Collection includes flyers from campus events, to-do lists, book/resource lists, 3 copies of Legacy, A Journal of American Women Writers, emails pertaining to sabbaticals, sabbatical reports, proposals and conferences, and early drafts of annotated bibliography.
Maintaining the integrity of Dr. Bowman's research is paramount for this project. We have not altered her work, on the index cards nor the Annotated Bibliography, in any way. If requesting further information within this site, please be mindful of this. Any information provided, via website or archivist, must be cited appropriately. To identify the Collection as the source of information that you are using in a paper, article, or book, we ask that you include the complete title of the Archive, its URL, and the date you accessed it, along with the other relevant information. By accessing the Collection, you acknowledge that you have read and accepted these conditions.
