Westerville Hunger Heroes 5K kicks off morning of fun family events.

Westerville, OH—The Otterbein University Center for Community Engagement invites the community to its annual Fall Harvest Festival from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Otterbein Community Garden, 390 N. Spring Rd. The event is free and open to the public with parking available at Heritage Middle School.

This year, the second annual Westerville Hunger Heroes 5k and 1-mile fun run will start at the Community Garden at 9 a.m. In its first year this event raised over $4,000 to end hunger in Westerville, where 39 percent of school age children receive free/reduced lunches. Proceeds were donated to ShareBacAPac, a non-profit organization that recently joined W.A.R.M. (Westerville Area Resource Ministry), and this year the run is adding Otterbein University’s Promise House as a recipient. For more information or to register, visit https://runsignup.com/Race/Events/OH/Westerville/WestervilleHungerHeroes5KandFunRun.

The family-friendly Fall Harvest Festival starts at 10 a.m. with activities and treats for all ages, including carnival games, fall crafts, a farmers market, apple cider and donuts, educational stations and service projects.

Otterbein’s Community Garden is divided into plots that are cultivated by a variety of community groups, including schools, neighborhood associations, veteran’s groups, senior citizen living communities, immigrant communities and Otterbein student groups. These gardeners are welcome to use gardening tools and water provided at the site. A portion of the produce is donated to local food pantries to feed members of our community.

The Fall Harvest Festival and its volunteers join millions of volunteers nationwide to improve the lives of others during Make a Difference Day.  This is the largest national community service day across the country.

The Fall Harvest Festival is a part of the United Methodist Church Days of Service initiative. For additional information or questions, please contact Stacey Rusterholz at srusterholz@otterbein.edu or 614-823-1272.
