WESTERVILLE, Ohio— In the first annual WOW robotics district championship, red team alliance member Digital Fusion took the win on May 27 at Otterbein’s Rike Center.

The WOW alliance consists of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics teams from West Virginia, Ohio, and parts of Pennsylvania.  Based on results from the season, teams qualified for an invitation to participate at the championship.

The championship marked Digital Fusion’s first win since it was formed seven years ago.  They were ranked 20 out of 31 going in.

“We had a really consistent robot so in a way I wasn’t surprised, but there’s just so much variability that you never know,” said Coach Judy Hedges.

Hedges credits the win to a new opportunity that was presented to the team this year.

“By Otterbein allowing us to use The Point, they played a huge part,” said Hedges.

The Point provided a place for Digital Fusion to meet, design, create, and implement their robot.  In years past, the team struggled to find a place that would meet their needs. This time, the team was able to implement a new design process and instill more discipline because of the opportunity.

Digital Fusion is competing at the CORI Robotics Invitational on June 24 at Dublin High School. Their ultimate goal is to attend the World Championships.
