Black Thought and Culture provides approximately 100,000 pages of monographs, essays, articles, speeches, and interviews written by leaders within the black community from the earliest times to the present. The collection is intended for research in black studies, political science, American history, music, literature, and art. It is a single source for the published works of numerous historically important black leaders. Along with well-known works, the collection features approximately 5,000 pages of unique, fugitive, and never-before-published materials. The database offers unprecedented possibilities for the study of the historical development of black culture and will appeal to students and scholars alike. It will enable teachers to create new courses and to compile reading lists that refer to individual authors, issues, viewpoints, and common critical issues.

EI Engineering Village is a cross database searching service offering a wide range of resources covering applied science and engineering. Databases include: Compendex, EI Patents, GeoBase, NTIS and Referex. Compendex contains references and abstracts from some 5,000 engineering journals, conferences and technical reports covering all engineering disciplines. Online coverage is from 1884 to date. Ei Patents comprises millions of patents from the US Patent and Trademark Office and European Patent Office. GeoBase is a multidisciplinary database of indexed research literature on the earth sciences, including geology, human and physical geography, environmental sciences, oceanography, geomechanics, alternative energy sources, pollution, waste management and nature conservation. NTIS (National Technical Information Service) database contains citations to unclassified reports from U.S. and international government agencies such as NASA, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the U.S. Department of Defense. Materials cited date from 1899 to the present. Referex Engineering is comprised of six collections of full-text searchable engineering reference e-books.

Welcome Our New Staff Members

New Information Literacy Librarian - Rares Piloiu has joined us as information literacy specialist. He comes to Otterbein College from the Queens Borough Public Library System of NYC. He holds several degrees, including a PhD and MLS, has taught at SUNY Buffalo and worked as a librarian in Europe. He is the liaison librarian for the departments of Education, Psychology, Theatre & Dance, and ESL

New Evening Supervisor - Carrie ZhengWe are excited to have Carrie Zheng from China as our newest graduate assistant. Carrie is enrolled in the MBA program and works for the library from 10 pm to 2 am Sunday through Thursday.  Her work allows us to continue offering extended hours this academic year.  When Carrie isn't working or closing the library, she enjoys tennis and swimming.

New Acquisition Manager - Elizabeth Carroll. A special belated welcome goes out to Elizabeth Carroll, who joined the library in February as our Acquisition Manager.  She works closely with the librarians, faculty and staff to purchase items for our library collection.   

Elizabeth was born in Pennsylvania, graduated from Otterbein in 2002 with her B.A. in History, and is currently enrolled in Otterbein’s MBA program.  She now lives in Dublin, OH, with her fiancé, John, and their three puppies.  When she’s not reading or watching movies, Elizabeth and John can be found hiking or playing Frisbee golf.  Elizabeth and John will be married on September 17th, and she looks forward to many more years of service to the Otterbein community.
