Otterbein Celebrates Nurse Practitioner Week
Department: Nursing

This week Otterbein joins the rest of the nation in recognizing and celebrating certified nurse practitioners (CNPs) and the expanding role they play in healthcare. The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners encourages individuals to recognize the contributions and service that nurse practitioners make to others.

A CNP is a registered nurse (RN) who has advanced training and education in a specialized area of health care. CNPs work with people of all ages to provide primary health care with a focus on disease prevention and management of acute and chronic illnesses. They function as educators and providers, allowing persons to make informed decisions about their health care. CNPs work collaboratively with physicians and other health care providers to ensure quality care.

The first nurse practitioner program was begun at the University of Colorado in 1965 by Nurse Loretta Ford and Dr. Henry Silver. Today CNPs provide excellent health care in a large number of specialty and general practice areas. The number of CNPs serving in our local communities and around the world has grown to more than 180,000.

Ohio's CNPs practice under the rules of the Ohio Board of Nursing. They are nationally certified and hold a Certificate of Authority (COA) to practice in their field. According to the Ohio Association of Advanced Practice Nurses (OAAPN), research studies over the last thirty-five (35) years have documented that CNPs provide high-quality, cost-effective care with a high level of patient satisfaction.

The Office of Graduate Programs reports that 236 students are enrolled fall semester in the MSN program.
