96 percent of 2016 Otterbein alumni employed or in graduate school

For the second year in a row, 96 percent of Otterbein graduates are either employed or enrolled in graduate school within six months of graduation, according to the annual Otterbein Center for Career and Professional Development (CCPD) undergraduate six month outcomes survey.

Of the 442 total number of 2016 alumni surveyed, information on 352 graduates was collected with 298 reporting they are currently employed in a full-time position. Additionally, 40 others are enrolled in a graduate degree program.

Among the top employers for recent graduates are some of Ohio and the world’s largest and most respected organizations, including OhioHealth, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, JP Morgan Chase and Nationwide Insurance.

Ryan Brechbill, director of Otterbein’s CCPD, said these outcomes by the class of 2016 post-graduation show just how prepared our students are to enter the workforce.

“It's clear that our students demonstrate highly sought-after skills including the ability to work in teams, communicate effectively and solve problems,” Brechbill said. “This rate of success can be attributed to the outstanding education Otterbein students receive inside and outside of the classroom.”

One key Otterbein University program Brechbill points to helping graduates secure positions after graduation is the Five Cardinal Experiences. A Cardinal Experience is an active and authentic concrete experience that engages students in real-world opportunities to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired in the classroom. A Cardinal Experience can happen in the community, on campus or across the globe.

Survey respondents also agreed the Five Cardinal Experiences helped them in finding a career.

“My Five Cardinal Experiences have given me the ability to learn quickly on the job and think critically to solve issues may not be covered in training sessions,” said one alumnus.

“I did a great deal of growing and learning while at Otterbein,” said another 2016 graduate. “It's fulfilling to see all of the hard work finally paying off. Overall, they taught me how to embrace learning and growth, while striving to achieve my goals.”
