Alumni to Return to Campus for Spring Weekend, Alumni Awards

Spring is in the air and alumni spanning from the 1940s through the 1960s are poised to return to campus for Alumni Weekend 2016, April 22-24. This annual tradition gives alumni an opportunity to reconnect with classmates, visit with current students and celebrate the successes of their peers at the Alumni Awards Gala.

The Class of 1966 will celebrate its Golden 50th Reunion this year with activities that include a Class of 1966 exhibit on display in Courtright Memorial Library, sharing their “Cardinal Tales” stories and the 50th Reunion reception and dinner at the Lakes Golf and Country Club. Alumni will also have the chance to tour campus, attend an alumni artist reception in the Becker Gallery for Anita Shannon Leland ‘55 and cheer on the Cardinals at one of many Otterbein sporting events taking place over the weekend.

The Classes of 1951, 1956 and 1961 will also convene to celebrate reunions at Alumni Weekend. Each class takes a class photo together and has the opportunity to reminisce about their time as Otterbein students. Throughout the weekend, touching stories emerge of Otterbein memories, couples that met on campus and later married and classes and professors that made a lasting impression on their lives.

Members of the Class of 1966 shared some of their thoughts about Otterbein in a memory book that is compiled and distributed at their Golden Reunion:

“Otterbein has always been a source of joy for me. Otterbein was a special time in my life where I met lifelong friends and earned an education that benefitted me in life.” —Michael Grayem ‘66

“I have worn many different “hats” and the ability to do so is, I believe, a testament to the value of the good liberal arts education I received while at Otterbein.”—Wade Bayer ‘66

“It’s hard to believe it’s been fifty years since my days at Otterbein. The nurturing atmosphere of a small campus like Otterbein was the perfect place for me to grow into adulthood and to prepare me for my career.”—Sherry Perlick Day ‘66

A highlight of Alumni Weekend is the annual Alumni Awards Gala at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, in Cowan Hall. Five accomplished alumni will be honored at the ceremony, which will be hosted by Otterbein alumnus Cabot Rea ‘78, former news anchor for WCMH-TV Channel 4. More than just a typical awards ceremony, the Alumni Awards Gala includes performances by numerous Otterbein student musical groups including the Otterbein Singers, The Freshmen Ensemble and the cast of All Night Strut.
