Art students Fritz and Hall need your votes for AICUO People’s Choice

By Alli Bates '16

Otterbein senior artists Chloe Fritz and Jennifer Hall are participating in the 2016 Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Ohio (AICUO) Award for Excellence in the Visual Arts (EVAs) competition. They need all of Otterbein’s help to vote for them in the People's Choice Award category. The deadline for voting is Friday, Feb. 26.

“The AICUO Award for Excellence in the Visual Arts is the nation’s first intercollegiate online arts competition. Many art programs at independent universities from around Ohio participate. Two or three seniors from each institution are nominated by their host schools,” said Fritz.

This year, there were 33 artists participating in the AICUO EVAs. There is a first round of judging to narrow those 33 down to six finalists who will show their work at an awards reception at this year’s host site, Otterbein. From those six, the Grand Prize Award winner will be chosen. Anyone can vote for a People’s Choice award winner online from the original 33 artists.

“Back in the fall I was approached by a faculty member,” said Fritz. “They asked if I would be interested in being nominated. Our art department chooses several students and then votes for the two they would like to represent the school. A few weeks later I found out that I was one of the two!”

The pieces Fritz entered are all photographs, some were taken with a DSLR and others were taken with a medium format film camera. They are all part of a series she’s been working on since spring semester of her sophomore year. All are images taken in her hometown of Zanesville, Ohio. Her work focuses on documenting the changing American landscape in an objective and direct way.

“I think the biggest challenge for me was making the entry video that was required. Writing about my work is one thing, but it was difficult for me to get in front of a camera and talk candidly about myself, my process and my work," said Fritz.

You can see the finished video on the AICUO website.

Fritz’s favorite part of the competition is getting to see the work from all the other talented artists from around Ohio. she knows without the support of her Otterbein professors, she wouldn't be in this position.

“I would like to say a huge thank you out to Professor Amanda Kline for helping me prepare for the competition, I couldn’t have done it without her.”
