Catherine Gallagher takes on museum internship to stand out from the crowd

By Courtney Kilmer ‘17

Every college student knows that internships are very important. They are the best way to get career experience in a potential job. Catherine Gallagher ‘18 knows this, and she’s already jumped in to her internship at the Otterbein Frank Museum.

Gallagher, an art with studio concentration and art history major, is excited for the opportunity to combine her passions for history and art in a way that will also make her stand out while applying to graduate schools in the future.

“Grad school is something I’m really looking into, especially because the art history field is so small, and it’s competitive. I think that working at the Frank Museum will definitely give me a boost with whatever career path I go down,” she said.

The Frank museum is operated with a staff of one full-time employee, one part-time employee and one intern, which means Catherine is able to work on a variety of different tasks and experience various aspects of a job as gallery curator. She was given the opportunity to curate the show currently in the Miller gallery, called Urban Reflections: Contemporary Thai Photography, which features emerging Thai photographers Lek Kiatsirikajorn and Miti Ruangkritya.

Otterbein offers many opportunities for students to participate in internships, no matter what department they’re a part of.

“It’s really awesome that we have so many opportunities in such a small university. I think this will definitely help me if I want to get another internship at a larger museum. I’m learning the tricks of the trade now, which is a lot more beneficial to employers,” said Gallagher. “And whatever department you’re in, you can always find something unique to your field that you want to go into.”
