Chase Moyer’s internship experience at Nationwide invaluable to career

Otterbein University knows that not everyone lesson can be taught solely in the classroom. That’s why experiential learning through internships is a big part of an Otterbein education.

Junior Chase Moyer has been involved with applying his actuarial science knowledge with an internship at Nationwide Insurance this year.

“I was able to get my resume to Nationwide through a contact within the organization, a contact in which I am very thankful for. My resume was passed to a member of the actuarial recruiting committee for the summer internship program within and he took the time to reach out to me,” said Moyer.

Through his phone call, he was notified that the Annuity Pricing Team had an open position for a part-time summer intern.

“My resume was then passed to that team and they reached out to me about the position. Through that process, I was able to learn about the internship position, interview for it, and happily accept their offer to fill the position,” said Moyer.

Moyer explains that the Nationwide Financial team has given him awesome opportunities to work on a variety of projects during his time with the company. During his internship, he has done a lot of work with annual return spreadsheets.

“These spreadsheets calculate annual returns for our customers, based on a variety of factors about each individual customer. I also have been able to work on some analyses for our team, to help the business make future decisions,” said Moyer.

Moyer’s favorite part of his internship has been gaining real world experience within the actuarial field.

“It’s exciting to be able to apply what I am learning at Otterbein, to real business problems and a multitude of projects. The people I have been able to meet and work with have also been one of my favorite parts of this experience as well,” said Moyer.

Moyer’s most challenging part was coming to the realization that asking questions is a great skill to possess and seeking help isn’t considered a weakness.

“I tend to try to figure things out on my own and hold back from asking for help, which actually limits growth. My manager encouraged me to ask him anything that I needed too, no matter how big or small my question may be. He was very patient and understanding with me, as was everyone else on the team,” said Moyer.

“It has been an extremely positive experience for me and I am very thankful for the opportunities that Nationwide has granted me.”
