COELEC Career Ladder Preservice Teachers

José Morales Crispin

Spanish Language Licensure candidate 2016, Puerto Rico

“My field placements at Otterbein gave me the opportunity to be in an American classroom as an educator.  The faculty at Otterbein has played a very valuable role in my development through my career.”

I am originally from Puerto Rico, and I moved here three years ago after spending a year abroad in Spain teaching English to elementary and middle school students. I wouldn’t be where I currently am without their guidance and support. They have been an invaluable part of my experience at Otterbein. The faculty has emphasized the importance of being humanistic, empathetic, and accepting. With the growing diversity of the U.S., we must be open to changes and embrace them – especially as an educator in the classroom.

“I cannot count how many times I was overwhelmed by the workload, but as soon as I speak with one of my teachers, I feel better and galvanized. They know how to push us without breaking us. They go beyond the call of duty. I strive to be like each one of them.”

I speak four languages; English, French, Fulani and Wolof. I immigrated to the United States in 2001. I’ve had many great experiences at Otterbein, but the most touching fact is how the teachers are always flexible, and go out of their way to help us succeed in this hard journey.
