Day of Events for Grand Opening of STEAM Innovation Center Oct. 1

Otterbein University is moving full steam ahead with its new, one-of-a kind STEAM Innovation Center integrating science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics — and the public is invited to celebrate and explore at a family-friendly event on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 60 Collegeview Road.

The day of events at the STEAM Innovation Center will kick off in the morning as Otterbein hosts a Community Cardboard Challenge event, part of the Global Cardboard Challenge, before dedicating its new cutting-edge innovation center. The day is also Homecoming at Otterbein, and the Cardinals will take on cross-town rivals, the Capital Crusaders.

There are a multitude of fun events throughout the day, including:

9 a.m.-12 p.m.
Cardboard Challenge in partnership with the Columbus Museum of Art and the PAST Innovation Lab
 -
This local event contributes to the larger global conversation about the importance of creativity to local communities so that our children grow up in a creative Columbus. Students from grades K-12 are invited to get creative and design cool cardboard objects. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, visit cbusatplay.com.

11:30 a.m.
“Wire cutting” ceremony and announcement of naming contest winner
 - Come hear about the latest, one-of-a-kind addition to central Ohio, where collaborative and innovative ideas will shape the future of learning and jobs.

12-2 p.m.
Tours, demonstrations, giveaways, food and drinks
 -
Demonstrations will include 3D printing, rapid prototyping, musical pipes, laser engraving, wood cutting, and more. An art space and robots will be on site with members of First Robotics high school teams and representatives from National Robotics Challenge. PC the Patrol Car and Busta the Bus, two robots from the City of Westerville and Westerville City Schools, will be roaming the building.

Otterbein partners attending the event include City of Westerville, Columbus State Community College, Ikove Capital Partners, PolymerOhio and Westerville City Schools. Also in attendance will be the center’s architect, Moody Nolan; contractor, Corna Kokosing; structural engineer, Jezerinac Geers; and mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP) engineer, Karpinski.

Otterbein’s students and faculty are partnering with businesses and industry experts in the center to explore, test, invent and create new ideas for the future while getting hands-on experience that will lead to job creation and economic development for the state of Ohio. The center’s programming will engage the K-12 and two-year public education communities in developing a pipeline of students to help fill the region’s workforce needs. Everyone is invited to share their STEAM Innovation Center photos and video on social media with the hashtag #OtterbeinSTEAM.
