Dispatch internship includes exhilarating ride for Otterbein senior Jeffries

Imagine an internship that allows you to travel 150 mph on the Mid-Ohio race course in a new Porsche. Imagine your driver is former Formula One driver Tommy Byrne, the subject of your interview.

That’s exactly what Otterbein journalism and media communication major Emily Jeffries experienced while working as a full-time features intern for The Columbus Dispatch this past summer.

She also learned extremely valuable reporting skills and got a thrill seeing her name in print.

“My internship at the Dispatch was so special because I worked with some of the best of the best (reporters) in the state,” Jeffries said. “I got to sit in meetings with journalists who have done some of the best watchdog journalism in Ohio. And they knew my name!”

From May until Aug., Jeffries authored more than 20 articles for the Dispatch. She contacted sources, traveled to interview subjects, and learned from an intense editing process with Dispatch staff members. Then, her writing became ink for the newspaper.

“The editing process taught me how to explain something that readers might not understand,” Jeffries said. “I wanted to feel like I put readers into the story and not just tell them about it.”

Jeffries was able to secure her internship this summer with the help of Mike Wagner, a Columbus Dispatch journalist and Otterbein Tan & Cardinal media adviser.

“Mike Wagner is an amazing mentor and magazine adviser,” Jeffries said. “He helped me see potential in myself and pushed me to apply for the internship when I originally didn't even think they would consider me. He has helped me be so much more confident in my journalism.”

At Otterbein, Jeffries is also a former reporter and editor of the T&C student-media publication. She graduates in December 2017 and hopes to pursue her passion for journalism as a reporter.

And as for her most exciting moment at the internship, traveling at breakneck speeds?

“He kept hearing me scream and then kept going faster and faster, just to freak me out,” Jeffries said. “It was one of the best experiences I've ever had.”
