Faculty, staff receive invitation to Otterbein Greek Life

Formal recruitment ended for most Greek chapters at Otterbein in Oct. 2015. On Jan. 20, faculty received their own formal invitation to partake in the Otterbein Greek community at Warm Up to Greek Life.

The event is the first of its kind at Otterbein University and was sponsored by both Panhellenic and Interfraternity council.

Faculty and staff were invited to a night of conversation with active chapters on campus. Faculty and staff were welcomed by Greek life advisor Ben Schwarz. Attendees then had the opportunity to mingle with chapter presidents, vice presidents, new member educators and other active members.

The event drew faculty and staff from all departments including sociology, graduate school advisors, Student Affairs and the Otterbein Police Department. Dean of Students Bob Gatti also attended the event.

“As a member of a fraternity as an undergraduate, and working with Greeks at Otterbein for the past 38 years, I definitely see the value in fraternity and sorority life and how it contributes to the growth of the individual along with the university,” Gatti said. “I think sometimes we too often focus on the negative aspects of student organizations, especially fraternities and sororities, and I think today’s event really highlighted some of the great things [the organizations] do”

IFC and Panhellenic Council hoped Warm Up to Greek Life not only provided faculty an insight into student organizations on campus, but will encourage more overall faculty involvement with Greek Life.

“One of the unique aspects of Otterbein is the student-faculty relationships,” Schwarz said. “Faculty are genuinely interested in their student's passions outside of the classroom. This event provided an opportunity for them to learn more about the chapters that students call their home-away-from-home.”
