Fourth-generation Otterbein alumnus shares the importance of The Otterbein FUND

Lauren Heberling ’19

Otterbein is more than just a college; it is a home to every person who has graduated and felt its sense of community. Dan Gifford ‘88 is a fourth-generation graduate and has followed in his family’s path at Otterbein, which began in 1892. He is proud to be a small part of Otterbein’s history.

Although Gifford started his college career at another university, he transferred to Otterbein knowing that he would be closer to home and his family. His time at Otterbein as an accounting major left him with the skills he needed to become a successful accountant, the traditions of a Greek brotherhood, and the true friendships and life lessons he has carried with him to today.

“I was never forced to attend Otterbein. It just happened to become my community and home,” Gifford said.

He values the connections he has made within his career and adds that he has worked with other Otterbein alumni for all but four years since his graduation.

He has been a great supporter of the Otterbein community as a member of the Alumni Council and was eager to play a larger role by becoming the chair of The Otterbein FUND in 2016. In this role, he has acquired a deeper appreciation for all the hard work that goes into making The Otterbein FUND a reality in helping current and future students have everything they need to be successful.

“I want to support the legacy,” Gifford said. “I always benefitted, I always contribute and now I am paying it forward. There is no one on campus who doesn’t benefit.”

The Otterbein FUND is even helping his son, Spencer, who is a first-year systems engineering major and a member of the golf team. Spencer is the 19th person from Gifford’s family to attend Otterbein and is now the fifth generation of their family Cardinal legacy.

“It is a blessing to work with family and contribute to Otterbein, a place where you belong and live with no regrets,” Gifford added.
