Girl Day Highlights Mentorship

Girl Day Highlights Mentorship

Otterbein hosted 45 students from Westerville City Schools on campus on Oct. 30 for Girl Day, a program of three middle school mentoring programs. The three weekly mentoring programs—Girl Talk, Chick Chat and Girls Are Really Awesome (GARA)—are run by Cardinal Corps Leaders through the Center for Community Engagement in partnership with Walnut Springs Middle School in Westerville.

“Each week, Otterbein volunteers with Girl Talk, Chick Chat and GARA go into sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade classrooms, respectively, where they lead activities, discussions and journal time about prominent issues in the middle school environment,” said Maria Slovikovski, co-leader of Girl Talk.

This event presented workshops on acceptance and support, as well as lunch in the Cardinal’s Nest and a tour of campus.

“Girl Day is centered on the ideas of acceptance and support. Otterbein volunteers ran sessions on accepting yourself, accepting others and accepting support from those around you,” said Slovikovski.

The girls were cheered throughout the day by students and the staff of the Center for Community Engagement. Through the motto: “Accept yourself. Accept others. Accept support,” the girls will be enlightened about fostering communities, social media campaigns and starting a movement.

Following Girl Day, the middle school girls will plan a campaign and fundraiser at Walnut Springs Middle School for a national or international cause. This year, Center for Community Engagement is currently in the process of choosing a women-based philanthropy for this year's campaign.

“Last year, the girls spread the word around Walnut Springs Middle School about why it is important for women to get an education. They coordinated coin wars during their lunch periods and donated their profits to the Malala Fund,” said Slovikovski.

Girl Day is sponsored by the Center for Community Engagement.  For additional information or questions, please contact Melissa Gilbert at mgilbert@otterbein.edu or Leslie Cavin at lcavin@otterbein.edu or 614-823-1272.
