Otterbein Orchestra Updates, Fall 2013
The summer was busy with string activities on campus. Suzuki Music Columbus held their summer institute at Otterbein again this summer. Chris Howes’s Creative String Workshop was also back on campus in July. Thanks to Dr. Ross, head of our piano area, we had our first string instrument summer camp for high school students in June, along with piano and composition. A good beginning and a great new tradition.
The 2013-2014 season promises innovative repertoire and guest performances in the Orchestra area. Wendy Morton, assistant principal cellist of the CSO joins our faculty as our cello professor and the cellist in QUBE, the string quartet at Otterbein. Wendy will continue to provide the artistry and expertise we have come to expect from that studio. The string orchestra program will focus on the double bass this fall. Two new works will feature Jena Huebner, assistant principal bass of the CSO as soloist. Chris Berg, our amazing jazz bass faculty, has composed a new work for bass and strings which we will premier. Also on the program will be a tango influenced work for solo bass, strings and percussion. I am also excited to present a regional premiere of a recent work by Juilliard composer, Eric Ewazen on that program. The fall concert will be in a new venue, as the orchestra will be part of a concert series at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Dublin. We hope to see you there.
