Today is #GivingTuesday, Dec. 1

Otterbein University + #GivingTuesday = Enhanced Student Experience

Although Otterbein University has frozen tuition for the third year in a row, the institution is not only providing the same life-changing opportunities with internships and travel abroad opportunities, it continues to seek out new ways to enhance the student experience across campus.

One avenue in which the university consistently uses to indirectly develop students and mature their goals after graduation is through events like #GivingTuesday.

Otterbein has committed to join #GivingTuesday for the second year, held on Dec. 1, to harness the collective power of Otterbein’s supporters to transform how people think about, talk about and participate in the giving season. Coinciding with the Thanksgiving Holiday and the kickoff of the holiday shopping season, #GivingTuesday will inspire people to help create a better world by giving to the charities and causes they support.

As participation grows, the results are seen by students as they will experience the giving in a variety of ways. One student has a chance to make a networking connection that will land them a job after gradation; or a student could have the chance to work with the latest technology, giving the student a leg up on the competition in the work force. It all depends on what the student has on his or her personal wish list at Otterbein.

For 168 years, Otterbein has been giving students the opportunities for service and hands-on experiences that help the university stand out as a model community. In recognition of Otterbein’s 168 years of giving students a quality education, we are asking for 168 donors to make a gift on #GivingTuesday. In the spirit of the holiday season, a loyal group of donors has committed to match up to the first $10,000 on this day.

“As the retail industry has long benefited from seasonal shopping that symbolically starts with Black Friday—a day that has since inspired Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday—#GivingTuesday serves as a celebratory day to jump start the giving season, when many make their holiday and end-of-year charitable gifts,” said Matthew D’Oyly, director of Otterbein’s Annual Fund.

According to Kathy Calvin, CEO of the UN Foundation, “#GivingTuesday is a counter-narrative to Black Friday and Cyber Monday because it reminds us that the spirit of the holiday giving season should be about community and not just consumerism. The most meaningful gift we can give our children, loved ones, friends and neighbors is the commitment to work together to help build a better world.”
