Ottertuned is taking their show on the road. And this time, the road leads to Illinois.

Otterbein’s student a cappella group Ottertuned will be traveling to Chicago to compete at the SingStrong conference March 11-13. They will be performing against other musical acts from across the Great Lakes area while also raising money for charity.

Ottertuned is a musical group made up of Otterbein students who perform unaccompanied vocal arrangements of pop music. Founded two years ago, they have already performed countless times on campus, Christmas shows at Oakland Nursery in Delaware, Ohio, created a day-long a cappella workshop for one hundred high school students (Pitch Fest) and competed in the ICCA Great Lakes Quarterfinals. But the SingStrong conference, which is an international charity, marks their first out of state performance.

“SingStrong is an event that is a great experience for networking with fellow musical peers,” said Ryan Hutcherson, one of the founders of Ottertuned. “The first night's main event is ‘ACA-IDOL.’ Audience members vote similar to American Idol by using their cell phones. The groups participating hear live feedback from the judges and the winners receive $1,000.”

Saturday and Sunday will feature over a dozen classes on musical skills such as recording techniques, stage presence, forming and directing an a cappella group, beatboxing, vocal health and musical arrangement. There will also be concerts featuring professional a cappella groups.

“We know that we wanted to reach out and connect more to the a cappella community outside of Columbus, Ohio. Our Co-Music Director, Lane Conley, took the initiative to research festivals.  He found SingStrong and then sent them a video from one of our performances. They ecstatically invited us to participate in the event,” said Hutcherson.

Hutcherson has been a part of the group since its formation. He thinks their biggest challenge preparing for SingStrong will be preparing the visual element of our performance, which includes choreography, staging and presence.

“We are confident in our sound, but the visual element is newer for this group.  Although new, it has been an enjoyable process and it certainly adds to the performance as a whole,” said Hutcherson.
