Professor of Equine Science Maria S. Calderone, DVM recently attended the rededication and reopening of The Family of Man exhibition in Luxembourg as an honored guest and family representative of the original curator of the exhibit. The Family of Man has been recognized by UNESCO on its Memory of the World Register for its depiction of the human condition in cultures throughout the world.

Calderone’s grandfather and Luxembourg native, Edward Steichen, curated the exhibit of 503 photographs taken by 273 photographers—professional and amateur, famous and unknown—from 68 countries. An introduction to the collection was written by Carl Sandburg, Steichen’s brother-in-law, who also selected the quotations that accompany the photographs.

After its first showing at the Museum of Modern Art in 1955, the exhibit toured the world for eight years, stopping in 37 countries, including the Soviet Union during the Cold War, and was viewed by over nine million people. In 1994, The Family of Man became a permanent installation in the Clervaux Castle of Luxembourg. The museum and exhibit underwent a three-year renovation and restoration project and The Family of Man was rededicated on July 5, 2013.
