Every student knows that the opportunities you seize while in college can help in the future when looking for jobs. Sean Brewster ’15 knew this very well, and because of his involvement and experiences, he got a job immediately after graduation with the Westerville Symphony, which includes musicians from Otterbein and the central Ohio community, as well as guest musicians.

According to the Westerville Symphony website, “The Westerville Symphony at Otterbein University evolved from the Otterbein Orchestra, a predominantly student ensemble within Otterbein University’s Department of Music.” During his college career, Brewster both played with the Symphony as well as interned with them, which he says gave him an advantage when applying for his job.

While attending Otterbein, Brewster did five internships, and his first was actually with the Westerville Symphony. He said it was the internship that really got him interested in the arts and arts administration.

“Things don’t always work out the way you think it will, but if you have passion for everything you do, that’s the most important thing at the end of the day,” said Brewster.

Otterbein really helped Brewster when it came to preparing for his career. His major is especially suited for the job he has now.

“The music and business degree gave me a perspective that was unique, especially with the combined music and business classes,” he said. “Then I had a number of classes that were music and business focused, so I think that helped me with what I’m doing now.”

“You can create a career out of music, but in order to do that you need to work hard. You need to find great experiences to get involved in so you can figure out what you want to do,” said Brewster.

The Westerville Symphony has an upcoming concert at 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 23, in Cowan Hall, titled Masterworks 3. It will be a celebration of great Russian music and will feature a guest cellist.
