Welcome to the Center for Community Engagement!

Otterbein College's Center for Community Engagement (CCE) builds community partnerships and enhances our historical relationships with neighboring communities. The CCE brings together campus volunteerism, service-learning, and community-based action research. During the 2007-08 school year, 83 service-learning courses enrolled over 1,300 students. Students, faculty, and staff currently support community engagement in five key areas:

Celebration of Service

The Center for Community Engagement would like to invite Otterbein's students and staff to the 2008 Celebration of Service on May 19 at 6:45 p.m. in the Chapel. Please join us as we reflect on the outstanding achievements of the Otterbein community and their contributions to our surrounding neighborhoods.

Otterbein Hosted Non-Profit Job Fair

The "Bring Your Conscience to Work" non-profit job and internship fair, hosted by the Center for Community Engagement and the Center for Career Planning, took place Thursday, May 8 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the Campus Center. The event matched motivated students interested in meaningful work with about 25 top non-profit organizations in central Ohio.

President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll

Otterbein receives Presidential Award for Exemplary Community Service

Otterbein College was one of three schools to receive Presidential Awards for General Community Service in the second annual 2007 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. In 2006, Otterbein was one of 13 finalists for the Honor Roll.

Otterbein Student Chelsea Merriman speaks at the Awards Ceremony in San Diego Chelsea Merriman, a junior at Otterbein majoring in psychology, spoke at the opening ceremony for The President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll Awards Ceremony.

Her speech, "Grow Something With Them," discussed the partnership between Otterbein College and the United Methodist Children's Home (UMCH). In this program, student volunteers worked with residents of UMCH to grow and maintain a garden of vegetables, herbs, and flowers to be sold at a local market. Merriman was awarded the 2007 Carter Partership Foundation Grant for her proposal. In addition, she was recently appointed as the youth representative for the Ohio Community Service Council by Gov. Ted Strickland.

Otterbein representatives accept The President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll Award at the American Council on Education Ceremony in San Diego

Otterbein President C. Brent DeVore, student Chelsea Merriman, and The Center for Community Engagement director Melissa Gilbert accepted The Presidential Award for General Community Service at the annual American Council on Education conference in San Diego on Monday, Feb. 11.

Service learning and community service are a long-valued tradition at Otterbein. Seventy percent of students engaged in community service activities in 2006 and 2007, with just over 50 percent giving time to efforts that served disadvantaged youth.
