473-1E: Africa

In December, students fly to Kigali, Rwanda to experience the rich history and culture of West Africa. "The purpose of this course is to create a better understanding how the various threads of religion, wildlife, politics, health and disease, economics, war and peace fit or do not fit together in a society," stated Simon Lawrance, professor of life and earth sciences and instructor of SYE 473.

In the fall, the class will meet and complete:
• Readings
• Watch films
• Lead discussions
• Try African food
• Listen to lectures

These experiences will develop a global knowledge, with respect to Rwandan history, culture, wildlife and contemporary issues.

Students will also conduct group research projects on recent Rwandan issues. This course will also include a service learning project. In past trips, students have raised money for various organizations. Students will also have the opportunity to gorilla and chimp trek, hike in Nyungwe Rainforest National Park and safari in Akagera National Park.
