Poetry-in-the-Schools
Poetry-in-the Schools (PITS) and other Writers-in-the-Schools (WITS) programs are becoming increasingly popular across the country. Most programs place professional writers in classrooms or after school programs. Our program is unique in that it is built on a service-learning model, training undergraduates in the history and pedagogy of teaching creative writing (English 375) and then placing them in a local middle school as poets-in-residence. The result is a collaborative learning experience for our undergraduates and for the middle school students. Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, is the only other program listed below in which undergraduates teach.
