Make-A-Difference Day

Students learn knife safety at the Fall Safety Expo on Make-A-Difference Day

On Make-A-Difference Day, the CCE works with students from Westerville and Columbus City Schools to encourage learning, safety and responsibility.

In 2007, Otterbein College celebrated Make-A-Difference Day with a Fall Safety Expo that explored a variety of important safety topics, including fire safety, the potential danger of strangers, disaster planning and knife safety, on Friday, Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

About 286 first, second and third grade students attended from Emerson, Mark Twain, and Hawthorne Elementary Schools.

Activities for the elementary students at the Fall Safety expo included a remote control miniature patrol car from the Westerville Police Department and a pumpkin-carving booth complete with knife-safety instruction. Students also participated in a blanket service project by helping make tied fleece baby blankets that will be given to a children’s burn unit.

Attractions at the Fall Safety Expo included a landing of the MedFlight helicopter on the football field, a fire truck from the Westerville Fire Department and an appearance by McGruff, the mascot of the National Crime Prevention Council. A K-9 Response team presented information with a canine and trainer. Information booths educated students about disaster relief, fire safety, stranger awareness, and Internet safety.

Some attractions were aimed more toward college students, such as alcohol goggles, a crashed car that illustrates the dangers of drunk driving and information from the Ohio Investigative Unit about danger awareness.
