Service-Learning
| In the 2008-2009 academic year, Otterbein will offer 33 courses with a service-learning component during the during the Fall quarter, 28 during Winter quarter, and 28 during Spring quarter. These classes will enroll about 1,300 students. |
At the core of Otterbein's service-learning courses is the principle that transformational learning is a central purpose of education. The times we live in and the evolution of experiential pedagogy do not permit us to settle for a lesser educational purpose when service-learning is appropriate to the goals of a course.
Examples of service-learning courses exist in every academic discipline. Students who participate in service-learning courses emerge from these experiences dedicated to a larger social purpose, and there may be no more important learning model than a pedagogy that actually applies course objectives, has students experience community service, and prepares students for a lifetime of community participation.
