Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Opportunity
The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship is designed to attract outstanding students into careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering. Scholarships are awarded to students who are sophomores or juniors during the current academic year with excellent academic records and demonstrated interest in and potential for careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. The scholarship covers eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board to a maximum of $7,500 per academic year. Junior scholarship recipients can expect to receive a maximum of two years of scholarship support. Senior scholarship recipients are eligible for a maximum of one year of scholarship support. The Otterbein deadline for applications is at 5:00 p.m. Dec. 4, and must be submitted to Dr. Tansey in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Information may be obtained from the Goldwater Scholarship Faculty Representative, Dr. John Tansey at 823-1497 or by email JTansey@otterbein.edu.


Students: Complete Instructor Evaluations Online
During Week 9, an email will be sent to your Otterbein email account with confidential log in information for the online instructor course evaluations. These evaluations should be completed by Friday, Nov. 20. Your responses are confidential. After logging in, it is a good idea to change your password in the system (under ‘other’ in the menu on the top right of the screen). All students are required to complete the evaluations because your feedback is needed to assure high quality teaching across the college. You are invited to view a poster session on Innovative Clinical Projects completed by our nine (soon to graduate) Clinical Nurse Leader MSN students on Wednesday, Nov. 18 from 4-6 p.m. in the 1st floor atrium of the Science Center. Student Receives National PRSSA Award
Otterbein senior Jeana Harrington received a national PRSSA Betsy Plank Scholarship at the national conference in San Diego, Nov. 6-10. She also received recognition with Gold Key honors for her involvement and leadership with the Otterbein chapter. Otterbein has had the most recipients of this prestigious national scholarship.


Executive Director Honored with NAFSA Award
Chris Musick, executive director for the Center of International Education and Global Engagement (CIEGE), received the annual NAFSA Award for Outstanding Contributions to International Education on November 13 in Washington, DC. This award recognizes a NAFSA (Association of International Educators) Region VIII colleague, who demonstrated a commitment to the field of international education by their dedication to the groups they serve and the collegial spirit he or she brings to the professional community.


Physics Professor Receives National Science Foundation Grant
Dr. Nathaniel Tagg, assistant professor of Physics and Astronomy, received the a $113,000 grant from the National Science Foundation for his project, "RUI: Neutrino Experiments with the NuMI Beam." Read more.

Travel Course Opportunities Available for Seniors and Juniors!
Some great international and domestic travel opportunities are still available during winter and spring quarters. Senior Year Experience courses that travel to places such as Jordan, Scotland and Rwanda are now open to juniors who have completed or will be taking concurrently, six of their 10 Integrative Studies courses. If you are a senior or a junior, consider the following international experiences and contact the faculty members for enrollment details:

  • SYE 473 Africa travels to Rwanda in early summer with Drs. Glenna Jackson and Simon Lawrance (spring 2010)
  • SYE 474 Strange Case of Edinburgh travels to Scotland in summer with Drs. Patti Frick and Dana White (spring 2010)
  • SYE 478 Middle East travels to Jordan during spring break with Drs. Chuck Zimmerman, Glenna Jackson and Omar Alomari.
  • Also available for seniors or juniors is a service-learning, domestic travel course that has students traveling to Salinas, California, and working with organizations that help meet the needs of those who are homeless and/or who are immigrants (travel late spring/early summer). SYE 425 Social Justice, Responsibility and Change is taught by Dr. Glenna Jackson.

SENIORS! New SYE Course, Winter Quarter 2010
Looking for a Senior Year Experience that allows you to use all the knowledge you’ve gained in the last four years, but is totally different from anything you’ve done already? Looking for a way to put your skills to work to help the community? Try MCOM 391: Media for Social Change. Also called Edu-tainment and Entertainment-Education, Media for Social Change weaves together drama, advertising, media production, business, sociology, education and health to create educational messages for specific target populations.

The class is open to students from all disciplines and qualifies as a Service Learning SYE. Projects are group-driven. The work takes place in community settings as well as the classroom and studios. Depending upon the size and talents of the group, the class will produce any of the following: self-contained soap opera, mini-drama, commercial-length Public Service Announcements (PSA's), or an entire package of media approaches focused on one social issue. Prereq: It is recommended that students speak with the instructor prior to registering for the class. MCOM 391: Media for Social Change. Winter 2010. Janice Windborne, Instructor.


Otterbein Professor Named Ohio Poet of the Year 
Terry Hermsen, professor of poetry, composition, and literature in the Department of English at Otterbein College, has been named co-Poet of the Year for 2009 for his book The River’s Daughter. Click here to read more.


Department of Nursing Receives Grant
The Ohio Board of Nursing awarded the Otterbein Department of Nursing nearly $200,000 for its 2-year project, FLAME: Fostering Leaders, Advocates, Mentors and Educators, beginning in September 2009. The project helps prepare licensed nurses in the skill sets of nurse educator and clinical nurse leader through an innovative education/leadership program.

Otterbein will expand on current collaboration with Fairfield Medical Center to collaborate with the Department of Veteran Affairs Chalmers P. Wylie Ambulatory Care Center to prepare students through intension mentored education and leadership immersion experiences. Through the use of distance technology and an accelerated format, the FLAME model will be implemented with students to complete a combined Nurse Educator and Clinical Nurse Leader program leading to a Masters Degree in Nursing and a Nursing Education Certificate. These Master's prepared nurse leaders will be encouraged to remain in their communities to improve health care quality, promote advocacy and/or serve as educators or mentors of pre-licensure nursing students.


Life and Earth Sciences Professor Receives Grant Award
Dr. Michael Hoggarth, professor of Life and Earth Sciences, received an award of nearly $31,000 from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for his project: Freshwater Mussel Survey of Lake Erie Refugia. The purpose of this project is to sample probable refugia in Lake Erie for mussels. Drs. Hoggarth and Thomas (of OSU) recently discovered unknown communities of mussels in a marina and in river channels emptying into Lake Erie. The objective of this study is to determine if other such habitats also support mussels.
