Otterbein College's 21st President Announces Retirement

Dr. C. Brent DeVore
C. Brent DeVore, the dean of higher education presidents in Central Ohio, has announced his plans for retirement. He will finish his 25th year in service at the conclusion of the 2008-09 academic year and officially leave his post June 30, 2009. The timing of the announcement gives the liberal arts college ample time to conduct a comprehensive search for its next president, led by its Board of Trustees.

“Brent’s commitment, tenacity, inclusiveness and empowerment have shaped the college in to what it is today,” said Tom Morrison, Chairman of the Board. “He has set the stage for a new chapter in the life of the college and we’re well positioned to take those next steps.” (more...)

Good Job!
Otterbein students are known for their community service efforts. Yet another group on campus is also known for loyalty and commitment to serving others. The Staff Council has been holding a Holiday Auction for 20+ years. With proceeds from the 2007 auction and luncheon, they were able to donate $3,950 in assistance to 12 Otterbein families and to Westerville Caring and Sharing.

New Programs in 2008 for Alumni & Friends (FREE!)

OC Cares about our alumni and friends and is offering a number of lifelong learning and self-improvement opportunities during 2008. The programs are free, but participants need to pre-register online or by calling the Office of Alumni Relations.

FEBRUARY OC CARES : Self Defense Classes Feb. 7 & 19 at 7 p.m.
Due to the overwhelming response to this offering, the Feb. 7 class is already closed.
Please register for the Feb. 19 class.

The class includes personal safety strategies, escape techniques, life and death situations, pressure point strikes, overcoming your natural reaction to fear, and much more. Larry Banaszak, Otterbein’s Director of Security, will be instructing the class. Larry, a black belt and retired Staff Lieutenant with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, was the self-defense instructor at the Patrol Academy. He has 30+ years of experience in the area of self-defense and guarantees you will leave the class informed and prepared to handle potentially violent situations.

"Continuous education is important throughout life and the lessons learned about personal safety can literally save your life.  Otterbein’s self defense class taught me how to avoid unsafe situations and how to make critical decisions if my safety is threatened.  Several scenarios were demonstrated along with defensive and offensive moves.  I highly recommend this class for both female and male alumni in all age groups. My daughter, who starts college next year, took it with me and it gave both of us greater peace of mind." - Dave Bender '97

Otterbein's Cutest Pet Contest has come to a close. At their January Alumni Council meeting, the Council had the difficult, but fun task of making the final selection. The winner is Delilah, owned by Betsy Martin Harvey '78 of Springfield, OH. Delilah wins a basket of treats (including her favs, Pupperoni's) and toys (especially toys that make noise, much to Betsy's chagrin.)
