Happy New Year!
Can it be 2006 already? It seems like just yesterday we were singing "Auld Lang Syne" to ring in the year 2000. Translated from ancient Scottish dialect "auld lang syne" means "times gone by." In addition to providing a connection to Otterbein, the Office of Alumni Relations works to bring alumni together to reminisce about times gone by and their memories of Otterbein.

When we gathered for the first staff meeting of 2006, we reviewed all of the events being planned for the coming year. It was awesome! You will find some of these events listed in this newsletter. We can unequivocally say that 2006 will be an exciting year for Otterbein alumni and friends! We hope you will join in these fun and enriching events planned for 2006. We know that these experiences will become fond memories for you in coming years.

Otterbein Clubs Taking Shape
Alumni know that Otterbein College has that “something special” that sets it apart from other colleges.  In addition to the beautiful campus and down-to-earth atmosphere, Otterbein values and respects its students.  From the first moment you stepped on campus you were welcomed as part of the Otterbein family.  Did you leave the family when you graduated?  No!  You are still part of the family and it extends worldwide.

The Office of Alumni Relations envisions the Clubs as a way to connect alumni with each other and to keep those Otterbein family ties alive.  Once established, Otterbein clubs will provide social, educational, and community service opportunities.  Additionally, they will support and advance Otterbein so that it remains a national treasure for generations to come.

Guidelines for club development will be established over the coming months. If you are interested in participating in the development of an Otterbein Club in your area go to Get Involved and fill out the online form.  Or call the Office of Alumni Relations at 1-888-614-2600 and speak with Bonnie Robinson, Assistant Director of Alumni Relations.

Adopt-a-Cardinal Program Takes Flight in 2006
Alumni from the Akron/Canton area met in the fall to brainstorm possible activities for alumni in the region. After a successful "Summer Affair of Fun" and "Akron/Canton Summer Send-off Picnic" last August, the group set its sights on a service activity. The Adopt-a-Cardinal program was hatched.

Remember being homesick when you were a freshman at Otterbein?  The Adopt-a-Cardinal program provides a way for Akron-Canton alumni to encourage and connect with Akron-Canton area freshmen via mail and e-mail.  It gives freshmen a “warm fuzzy” from home and boosts their morale.  It gives them a friend from home who has an Otterbein connection.

The Adopt-a-Cardinal program will continue in September to support the incoming Class of 2010. If you are interested in adopting a freshman student from the Akron/Canton region, please contact the Office of Alumni Relations.

What I Did on my Winter Break
Otterbein students in Chile Senior students at Otterbein participate in Senior Year Experience (SYE) courses designed to bring together the knowledge they have gained in their majors and in their entire Otterbein educational experience. While many students participate in SYE classes, students also have the opportunity to participate in international travel.

Chuck Vedder, director of international student programs, coordinated student travel over the winter quarter break to Africa, England, Scotland, Chile, Argentina, and Austria, to name a few. Read more about their adventures here.
