Gifted Education Institute Description

The Institute meets the 30 hours of professional development in gifted education outlined by Ohio's Operating Standards for identifying and serving students who are gifted and includes an additional 30 hours during the school year. 

The Institute is organized in four modules.

  • identification of gifted students
  • characteristics of gifted students
  • higher-level thinking and complexity
  • curriculum design for gifted education

All activities and topics are aligned to the Ohio Association for Gifted Children's (OAGCs) position statement, What is Gifted High Quality Professional Development?  The Institute also coincides with Otterbein's "Essex" program for teens who are gifted, giving teachers a unique opportunity to observe gifted education in action, to learn new strategies for teaching gifted students, and to apply new knowledge right away.

Dates, Location, and Cost of Institute 2017

Dates & Times: June 19 - 23 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Location: Otterbein University - Welcome!  (lunch will be provided)
Cost of Institute: $279
Instructors: Coordinators of gifted education programs and other experts in the gifted education field.

Earn Graduate Credit

1-credit option: Participate in the 30-hour Institute and earn 1 semester hour of graduate credit while also working toward the requirement of the state's new gifted operating standards of an initial 30 hours of professional development in order to provide service to gifted learners. There will be an opportunity to earn an additional graduate credit hour during the regular academic year. 

  • Additional Cost of $200 for total cost of $479

  • Application for credit option - Choose the Professional Development application option.
