Head Coach Ryan Borland
Ryan
Borland begins his seventh season as head men's and women's cross country coach
for the Cardinals.
Borland was named OAC
Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year for the third time in his career in
2004, leading his team to
a second-straight OAC
championship and a third-place finish at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes
Regional—just missing qualification for the NCAA Championships by one team
place. Borland was also named
OAC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2000.
In addition, Borland led the
women’s team to a second-place finish at the 2004 OAC Championships. In 2003,
he guided the women's team to its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III Women’s
Cross Country Championship following third-place finishes in both the Great
Lakes Regional and OAC Championship.
Borland ran for Otterbein from
1994-97, and was a member of two NCAA qualifying teams, including the team that
placed eighth in the nation in 1994. He currently holds the tenth fastest
10,000 meters time in school history (31:52).
He
graduated in 1997 with a bachelor's in education, and currently teaches history
at Genoa Middle School in Westerville. Borland is married to Heather
Borland, who is an assistant coach in track and field. The Borland's have
a daughter, Colbi, 4, and son, Cale, 1, and live in Galena.
Assistant Coach Dave Lehman
Dave
Lehman enters his 37th season working with the cross country team, as he took
the program over in 1970. He has brought national prominence throughout
his time at Otterbein.
He has led the Cardinals to seven Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) cross country
championships, and his men's teams have finished in the top three every year
since 1979.
His 1994 team placed eighth in the nation, and finished 17th in the nation the
following year. Lehman has coached four All-Americans in cross country and
five in track and field, including five-time All-American Tom Schnurr, who
graduated in 1988.
He works with the men's distance squad during the indoor and outdoor track
seasons.
He graduated in 1970 from Otterbein with a bachelor's in business and math, and
owns Culver Art and Frame Company in Lewis Center. He and his wife,
Claudia, have three children and live on the edge of the Otterbein campus.
Their son, Ben, is a senior member of the
cross country team.
