David Lehman Named Head Coach
Written May 19, 2009 by Ed Syguda
WESTERVILLE, OHIO—Otterbein named David Lehman its new head coach for
men’s and women’s track and field, Otterbein athletic director Dick Reynolds
released today.Lehman, who brings nearly 40 years of
coaching experience—all at Otterbein—to his new position, replaces Doug Welsh,
who is retiring after 18 seasons at the helm of the Otterbein track and field
program. Welsh joined Otterbein College as head men’s track and field coach and
assistant football coach in 1991.
“Coach Lehman’s long tenure here in track and field as well
as cross country affords us the opportunity for continued success in both
programs,” Reynolds said.
Lehman, who served as Otterbein head men’s cross country coach from 1970-99, has
been an assistant track and field coach at his alma mater since graduation from
Otterbein in 1970.
“I really like NCAA Division III because the kids are here
for academic reasons and the athletics—while it’s very important and we want to
make it a priority—is still secondary to the academics,” Lehman said.
“The things that we want to emphasize in taking this
program forward are good team atmosphere and for the student-athletes to be
supportive of each other,” Lehman continued. “We're looking for enthusiasm,
talent and putting good effort into the athletics. We want them to work hard,
have big dreams, and do it.”
Upon graduation from Otterbein in 1970, Lehman helped build
a successful business, the Culver Art and Frame Company, and served as the
company’s secretary treasurer until the business was sold in 2005. Lehman
remained with the company in an administrative role until 2009.
Over the course of his coaching career, Lehman led his
men’s cross country teams to seven Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) championships
(1980, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1992, 1994 and 1995), and into the NCAA Division III
Championships ten times. His 1994 team finished eighth in the nation, and his
1995 squad took 17th place. He has coached five All-Americans.
Lehman is a seven-time OAC “coach of the year” selection in
men’s cross country, and has earned numerous awards, including the Service to
Otterbein Award from the Otterbein Alumni Association in 2005. He served on the
Otterbein Board of Trustees from 2003-06.
Coach Lehman and his wife, Claudia, have three grown children and two
grandchildren, and live in Westerville, on the edge of the Otterbein campus.

“My heart goes out to the team for the effort our
women put forth last weekend,” said Otterbein head coach Doug Welsh. “Even when
Emily Bonnette re-injured herself in the long jump and could not compete
Saturday, and when Lauren Rausch hit the second-to-last hurdle and went down to
the track 15 meters from possibly winning the race, our women never gave up.
“Performances by Andie Pautsch, Nikki Reese, and
the unselfish attempts to fight through long-term injury situations to help the
team all they could by Abby Ludwig, Ally Tobin, and Anna Yonker were, to me,
inspirational,” Welsh said.
Sophomore distance runner Andrea Pautsch took home
Otterbein’s lone individual championship, winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase
by 10 seconds in 11:59.66.
Senior All-America thrower Allyson Tobin and
sophomore jumper Emily Bonnette turned in second-place performances to earn All-OAC
honors (top three finishers in an event garner All-OAC honors). Tobin placed
second in the shot put (42-4 3/4) while Bonnette, who re-aggravated an injury in
the long jump, took second in the event with a jump of 17-9 3/4. She was unable
to defend her OAC title in the triple jump.
Third-place finishes were turned in by senior Kyra
Smith, high jump (5-0 1/2); sophomore Sarah Petraitis, 100-meter hurdles
(:15.76); and freshman Samie Corbin, 400-meter hurdles (1:05.18).
Cards Shoot for Third-Straight OAC Title
Written April 23, 2009 by Ed Syguda
WESTERVILLE, OHIO—Otterbein, seeking its third-straight outdoor title,
could be challenged when the 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Outdoor Track
and Field Championships get underway Friday at Wilmington College.
“The women
face a task as difficult as I’ve seen in the last four to five years,” said
Otterbein head coach Doug Welsh. “Four teams are capable of winning, and, at
least two others have athletes, who can place high or even win events, which
will make their teams a factor.
“While I’m not sure our women have enough overall health to defend last
year’s title,” Welsh continued. “I know they will give an all-out effort to do
so."
Junior distance runner Nicole Reese and senior All-America thrower Allyson
Tobin head into the championships with the best performances in the OAC this
season in the 5000-meter run and shot put, respectively. Reese ran a 17:53.91 in
the 5,000 at the All-Ohio, and also holds the third best time in the 3,000-meter
steeplechase (11:57.35). Reese is the defending champion in the steeplechase.
Tobin, three-time defending shot put champion, threw the shot 41-5 at Emory
University.
Sophomore Emily Bonnette, who is defending champion in the triple jump, and
sophomore distance runner Andrea Pautsch are among the conference leaders in two
events. Bonnette holds the second best mark in the triple jump (36-7 1/2), and
third best in the long jump (17-7 1/2). Pautsch sits second in both the
steeplechase (11:57.3) and 10,000-meter run (39:00.64).
Otterbein holds four of the top six spots in 100-meter hurdles. Sophomore
Sarah Petraitis sits third (:15.41) and is followed by senior All-America Lauren
Rausch (:15.48), sophomore Lisa Coleman (:15.54), and freshman Samie Corbin
(:15.55). Corbin also ranks third in the 400-meter hurdles (1:05.22).
The Otterbein 4x800-meter relay team holds the fastest time in the OAC this
season, a 10:09.75 run at Emory.
Otterbein Wins Ohio Wesleyan's Marv Frye Invitational
Written April 06, 2009 by Ed Syguda
WESTERVILLE, OHIO—Otterbein scored 137 points to easily win the Marv Frye
Invitational hosted by Ohio Wesleyan Saturday in Delaware.
Baldwin-Wallace
finished second with 95 points and was followed by Oberlin (93), Capital (86),
and Ohio Wesleyan (71), in the 14-team field.
The Cardinals won four events, which included the shot put, triple jump,
3000-meter steeplechase, and 100-meter hurdles on their way to the team title.
“Perhaps because the women are slowly starting to get some individuals back
from prolonged injury situations, the meet at OWU had more of a complete team
feel to it,” said Otterbein head coach Doug Welsh.
“They aren’t there yet,” Welsh cautioned, “but if they get relatively close
to 100 percent collectively, our women might be able to be more of a factor for
others to contend with than has been the case so far.”
In field events, senior All-America Allyson Tobin won the shot put with a
throw 40-11 3/4. Sophomore Emily Bonnette won the triple jump (35-10 3/4) and
placed fourth in the long jump (15-9).
Once again, Otterbein dominated the hurdles, taking four of the top five
spots in the 100-meter hurdles, and four of the top six in the 400-meter
hurdles.
Sophomore Sarah Petraitis won the 100-meter hurdles (:15.58) and placed fifth
in the 400-meter hurdles (1:09.47).
Sophomore Andrea Pautsch rounded out the group of Otterbein event winners,
taking the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:48.09.
Otterbein is scheduled to compete in the All-Ohio next, slated for Saturday
at Ohio Wesleyan.
Cards Finish Second at OAC Indoor Championships
Written March 10, 2009 by Ed Syguda
WESTERVILLE, OHIO—Otterbein finished second at the Ohio Athletic
Conference (OAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships held Friday and Saturday
at Capital.
Ohio Northern won the meet with 147 points and was followed by
Otterbein (104.5), Baldwin-Wallace (92.5), Marietta (91), and Capital (84). All
ten schools competed in the meet.
“I have to give a great deal of credit to Ohio Northern for the performance
levels they displayed,” said 19th-year head coach Doug Welsh. “That has always
been a strong point for our women, as well, over the years.
 |
| Andrea Pautsch finishes second in the 5,000-meter run. |
“Even though some of our highly-decorated individuals were injured and not
close to 100 percent for the championships, all teams have to go through that,”
Welsh continued. “I still felt that if we competed well, our women could
possibly be in close contention. We experienced a little too much inconsistency
from event to event and it proved costly.”
Although the Cardinals did not take home any individual titles, the team
finished second in five events: shot put, 55-meter hurdles, 5,000-meter run,
3,000-meter run, and distance medley. Eleven members of the team earned All-OAC
honors by finishing in the top three.
Otterbein scored 20 points in the 55-meter hurdles. Sophomore Sarah Petraitis
and All-America senior Lauren Rausch finished second and third, respectively,
each in 8.59 seconds. Sophomore Lisa Coleman placed third (8.69) to garner All-OAC
honors.
Other second-place finishes were turned in by senior All-America Allyson
Tobin, shot put (41-10 3/4); sophomore Andrea Pautsch, 5,000-meter run
(19:03.07); and senior Abby Ludwig, 3,000-meter run (10:48.29). The distance
medley relay team, which included senior Anna Yonker, junior Danielle Vickers,
junior Nicole Reese, and senior Gabby Schllaku, also placed second in the meet.
Rounding out the list of all-conference performances were Vickers, third in the
1,000-meter run (3:08.58); and the 4 x 200-meter relay team of sophomore Jocelyn
Hennon, Coleman, Petraitis and Yonker, which also placed third (1:48.34).

“Our women showed some signs of stepping up their performances in a
larger-meet setting,” said 19th-year head coach Doug Welsh. “I think there is
more they can do if their concentration is solid and some of our top athletes
can come back strongly from injury situations.”
Otterbein scored 26 of its 84 points in the 55-meter hurdles, which was won
by All-America Lauren Rausch. The Otterbein senior ran the race in 8.48 seconds,
provisionally qualifying for the NCAA championships. Sophomore Sarah Petraitis
took second in 8.56, just .01 seconds off the NCAA provisional-qualifying time
of 8.55. Teammates sophomore Lisa Coleman finished fourth (8.75), and freshman
Corbin Samie placed sixth (8.75).
The Cardinals placed second in the shot put and distance medley.

41-3. The distance medley team of Danielle Vickers, Nicole Reese, Jocelyn Hennon

place.
Third-place finishes were turned in by senior distance runner Abby Ludwig in
the mile run (5:17.77), and senior Kyra Smith in the high jump (4-11 1/2).
The Cardinals compete next this Saturday at Kent State University.

Written June 6, 2008 by Ed Syguda
WESTERVILLE,
OHIO—Otterbein track and field performers Katie Homan and Allyson Tobin were
named to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV Women’s
Track & Field/Cross Country teams as selected by the College Sports Information
Director’s of America (CoSIDA).
 |
|
Katie Homan |
Homan, a senior from Fort Recovery (Coldwater High School), was selected to
the first team and is now eligible for Academic All-America consideration.
Tobin, a junior from Lancaster (Fisher Catholic), was named to the second team.
Homan, an athletic training major, has made the Otterbein Dean’s List all 11
quarters. She won the discus for the second straight year at the Ohio Athletic
Conference (OAC) outdoor championships this season to finish her career with
five All-OAC performances, three in the outdoor discus and two in the outdoor
shot put.
 |
|
Allyson Tobin |
Tobin, a nursing major, earned All-America honors in the shot put twice in
2008. She finished fourth at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field
Championships and placed eighth at the outdoor national championships. She is a
three-time indoor and a three-time outdoor OAC champion in the shot put.
Academic All-District IV team members are selected through voting by CoSIDA,

Tobin Takes Home All-America Honors in the Shot
Written May 24, 2008 by Ed Syguda
OSHKOSH,
WISCONSIN—Allyson Tobin, a junior from Lancaster (Fisher Catholic High School),
took home All-America honors for the second time in her career, finishing eighth
in the shot put today at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships
hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Tobin, who earned All-America honors during the 2008 indoor season, threw the
shot 44-8 1/4 in the finals to secure All-America by finishing in the top eight.
The All-American just made the finals with a throw of 43-10 in the
preliminaries, two inches better than the cutoff mark of 43-8.
“That’s what competitors do when they are having an off-day—and Allyson
doesn’t have many of those—they still find a way to achieve their goal,” said
Otterbein head coach Doug Welsh. “And she did. She passed one person and got up
on the podium as an All-American. When you are top eight in the country, that’s
awfully strong.”
Tobin’s best throw this season, 45-5 1/4, came at the Ohio Athletic
Conference outdoor championships where she won her third-straight individual
championship in the shot put.
Lauren Lucci, a senior from Widener University, won the national title in the
shot put with a distance of 47-4 1/4.
Tobin Heads to the NCAA's
Written May 20, 2008 by Ed Syguda
WESTERVILLE,
OHIO—Allyson Tobin, a junior from Lancaster (Fisher Catholic High School), has
qualified to compete in the shot put at the NCAA Division III Track and Field
Championships scheduled to begin Thursday at the University of
Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Tobin, who earned All-America honors during the 2008 indoor season, qualified
for the national meet with a throw of 45-5 1/4 on her way to a third-straight
individual title at the Ohio Athletic Conference outdoor championships held in
April. She holds the ninth best distance in NCAA Division III this season.
“It is a real tribute to Ally’s organizational abilities, work ethic, and
athletic talent that she is once again going to a national meet,” said Otterbein
head coach Doug Welsh. “She competes at such a high level while maintaining her
status as an elite nursing student. Ally is the essence of what a Division III
student-athlete should, and could aspire to be.”
Three other Otterbein track and field performers came close to qualifying for
the national meet. Stacey Schall, a junior from Lancaster (Bloom Carroll),
missed qualifying for the 100-meter hurdles by three spots while Emily Bonnette,
a freshman from Marietta (Warsaw), missed the cutoff for the triple jump by four
spots. Ashley Suffel, a senior from Defiance, needed to jump six spots to
qualify for the 800-meter run.
Schall and Suffel turned in career best marks at the Gregory Invitational
hosted by North Central College in Naperville, Ill. last Saturday. Schall ran
the 100-meter hurdles in 14.83 seconds while Suffel covered the 800 meters in
2:14.13. Bonnette’s best distance this season in the triple jump, 37-7 1/4, came

Cards Seek to Repeat as Champs
Written April 24, 2008 by Zach Manoogian
WESTERVILLE, OHIO—Otterbein heads to Wilmington this Friday and Saturday
for the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Championships. The Cardinals, the 2007
OAC champions, seek to successfully defend their title against tough
competition.
“Baldwin-Wallace has to be considered the favorite,” said 18th-year head
coach Doug Welsh. “I’m not sure our team has put together a total meet to this
point. Our veterans need to lead, and our younger people have to step up for us
to be in contention.”
Lauren Rausch, a junior from Edison (Mt. Gilead High School), is seeking
defend her 2007 individual championship in the 10,000 meter hurdles. Allyson
Tobin, a junior from Lancaster (Fisher Catholic), also seeks to defend her 2007
title in the shot put.
“Our women have a great deal of pride and I am hopeful they will give their
best because that’s what it takes to repeat as champions,” said Welsh.
A team victory would give the Cardinals their seventh OAC title overall and
fourth in the past six years.

Emily Bonnette, a freshman from Marietta (Warren High School), won the long
jump (17-2 3/4) and placed fourth in the triple jump (34-7 1/2). All-American

the 100-meter hurdles (:15.24).
Despite the good showing, Welsh feels his team has not yet jelled this
season.
“I’m not sure we are yet obtaining the unity needed to make the run we would
like to make,” Welsh said. “I’m hoping that our leaders will lead, and our team
will follow. They cannot afford to be at anything but their top performance
level as the OAC Championships approach.
The Cardinals return to action Saturday, traveling back to Delaware for the
All-Ohio at Ohio Wesleyan.

earned All-America honors today at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field
Championships hosted by Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio.
Rausch, a junior from Edison (Mt. Gilead High School), finished sixth in the
55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.35 seconds. Sumer Rohrs, a junior from
Frostburg State, won the event in 7.96 seconds. “I just really wanted to go
out and finish better than where I started and I did that,” Rausch said.
Tobin, a junior from Lancaster (Fisher Catholic), finished fourth in the shot
put with a throw of 44-9 3/4. Monique Riddick, a freshman from Montclair State,
won the event with a throw of 46-4 3/4.
“Allyson is
a truly great competitor,” said Otterbein head coach Doug Welsh. “She has
learned to compete at this level and will only get better.”
Kelli Peirano, a graduate student from Gahanna (Lincoln), just missed making
the finals, running the 55-meter hurdles in 8.40 seconds in the preliminaries,
which were held Friday. Peirano earned All-America honors in this event with a
fourth-place finish in 2006.

Earn All-America Honors

Pole-vaulter Alysha Gossel and hurdler Kelli
Peirano earned All-America honors today at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and
Field Championships hosted by St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn.
Gossel, a junior from Lancaster, finished sixth
in the pole vault with a vault of 11-7 3/4, which equaled her personal best.
Stephanie Barnes, a senior from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, won the
event with a vault of 12-7 1/2.
Peirano, a junior from Gahanna (Lincoln High
School), finished fourth in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.35 seconds.
She turned in the third fastest time, 8.32 seconds, in Friday’s preliminaries.
Sheana Grigsby, a senior from Carthage College, won the event in 8.05 seconds.
The
top eight finishers in an event earn All-America honors.
Otterbein went a perfect 4-for-4 today as its two men’s track athletes also
earned All-America honors at the national meet. Mike Sawicki, a senior from
Ashtabula (Lakeside High School), finished second in the 5,000-meter run
(14:37.49), and Justin Rush, a sophomore from Cortland (Lakeview), finished
fifth in the 55-meter hurdles (7.77 seconds).
“I can’t believe it, and I saw it happen with my own eyes,” said
16th-year head coach Doug Welsh. “I’m proud of all of them.”
What really impressed Welsh more than anything was that each student-athlete
was able to move up in the national rankings. None of the four was ranked higher
than seventh heading into the meet. For example, Sawicki was ranked eighth
coming in and finished second.
“As
a group—they are tough mentally,” Welsh said. “They really compete and go
after people. They are fun kids to be with, but they are serious.”

Cardinals Place Second at OAC Indoor Championships
Written by Craig Coleman 03/06/06
The Cardinals placed second out of 10 teams at the Ohio Athletic
Conference (OAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships held last Friday and
Saturday at Ohio Northern.
Baldwin-Wallace won the meet with 158 points, followed by Otterbein (134), Ohio
Northern (121), and John Carroll with 75 points.
Sixteenth-year head coach Doug Welsh was impressed and full of praise for the
Cardinals’ efforts over the weekend.
“Our kids really exhibited a lot of mental toughness,” Welsh said.
“There was no quit or stopping in them.”
Several Cardinals placed at or near the top of their respective events.
Junior Kelli Peirano (Gahanna/Lincoln) won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of
8.35, while junior Elizabeth Hoffman (Columbus/Whetstone) finished in second at
8.65.
“Peirano has made herself into one of the best hurdlers in the nation,”
Welsh said. “If you watch her, she’s not very tall but she generates so much
power. She’s a great combination of talent, physical preparation, and mental
toughness.”
Welsh was equally happy with Hoffman’s performance. “Libby has fought
back from some injuries, and her performance last weekend was like the Libby
Hoffman we all know.”
Peirano and Hoffman also placed second (7.48) and eighth (7.61) in the
55-meter dash.
Freshman Anna Yonker (Lancaster/Bloom Carroll) had an outstanding day placing
first in the 400-meter dash (1:00.10) and third in the 300-meter dash (42.56).
“She’s so competitive, she just loves to race,” Welsh said. “She’s
like a pit bull; she just does not give an inch and outworked everybody to win
the 400-meters.”
Junior Alysha Gossel (Lancaster) continued to dominate the pole-vault event
finishing in first for the third consecutive year with a vault of 11-06.50.
Welsh pointed out that the type of career Gossel is having shouldn’t be taken
for granted.
“It’s quite an accomplishment for her to remain at the top this long at
this high a level and she’s still getting better,” Welsh said. “And
she’s not going to rest until she accomplishes all her goals.”
In the shotput, freshman Allyson Tobin (Lancaster/Fisher Catholic) placed
first with a throw of 42-05.50, while sophomores Danielle Michel
(Vandalia/Wayne) and Katie Homan (Coldwater) finished fourth (38-07.50) and
fifth (38-07.00).
“Tobin is a freshman who has had an unbelievable amount of success when you
consider she never really seriously picked up a shot-put until two months
ago,” Welsh said. “She has a tremendous future if things keep falling for
her health-wise and motivation-wise.”
Junior distance-runner Melinda Keesee (Westerville/Dublin Scioto) placed
fourth in the one-mile run (5:15.74) and 5000-meter run (18:32.85), while
placing fifth in the 1000-meter run (3:12.72).
“When Melinda came out of high school she was overlooked and underrated,”
Welsh said. “In three years, she has made herself into probably the most fit
person on the team.
She’s tireless and she’s getting every bit out of her ability. I told her
she’s kind of like a jet-fighter around the world where all somebody has to do
is just stop by and re-fuel her. She never stops running. We have this old
saying that you should never leave anything out on the track, and she
didn’t.”
Junior Amanda Fugate (Seville/Cloverleaf Senior) placed in two events, the
long jump and 400-meter dash, finishing third and sixth, while sophomore Ashley
Suffel (Defiance/Defiance Senior) placed third in the 800-meter run.
In the relay events, Otterbein placed second in the 4x200-meter (1:46.40),
fifth in the 4x400-meter (4:15.22), and third in the distance medley (12:44.82).

at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships scheduled for March 10-12 in
St. Olaf, Minn.

Gossel established a new meet record in the event, vaulting 11-9.
The previous record was set by Jackie Kaup of Ohio Northern, who vaulted
11-3 in 2002. This was Gossel’s
fourth OAC pole vault championship since coming to Otterbein last year.
Douds, who has been throwing the javelin less than a month, tossed a new
personal-best 125-11 for the title. It
moved her up to third on the Otterbein all-time list.
Peirano crossed the line first in a very fast 100-meter hurdles field.
Her time of 14.86 was a new personal best and an NCAA-provisional
qualifying time. The first four
finishers met the NCAA provisional standard.
Sophomore Libby Hoffman turned in a very busy and impressive OAC meet.
She finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (15.02), fourth in the 100
meters (12.76), fifth in the 200 meters (26.52), and was the anchor leg on the 4

for OAC Indoor Title Tightens
(written by Justin Milam 03/03/05)
Otterbein will look for its third-straight Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC)
championship this weekend when they head to Marietta College for the indoor
track championships.
There is no clear-cut favorite to win this year’s meet as Otterbein, Ohio
Northern and Baldwin-Wallace all have excellent chances to win the team title.
Earlier this season, Ohio Northern edged Baldwin-Wallace by two points to
win the OAC Relays, with Otterbein finishing 17 points back in third place.
A few weeks later, Baldwin-Wallace came back to win the Division III
All-Ohio Championships, finishing ahead of Ohio Northern and Otterbein.
A season ago, the Cardinals won the conference indoor title with 145.5
points, while runner-up Ohio Northern scored 121.
Otterbein returns two conference champions from 2004.
Sophomore Libby Hoffman, who sits seventeenth in NCAA Division III in the
55-meter hurdles, will look to defend her title in that event.
Sophomore Alysha Gossel, who sits fourteenth in the nation in the pole
vault, will look to defend her title in that event as well.
The Cardinals hope to score points in the 55-meter hurdles and the pole
vault. Besides Hoffman in the hurdles, Otterbein will run NCAA-provisional
qualifier Kelli Peirano and sophomore Krysta Douds.
The trio will join freshman Megan Clifton in the 55-meter dash.

Indoor
Season Begins at Capital
(written by Justin Milam 01/06/05)
The Otterbein women’s track and field team enters the indoor track season
hoping for another successful season and third straight Ohio Athletic Conference
(OAC) championship. Last season,
Otterbein rounded up 145.5 points at the OAC Championships, with runner-up Ohio
Northern totaling 121 points.
“We have lost some outstanding performers from last year, so a huge key for
this team will be the manner in which our experienced people perform,” said
Otterbein head coach Doug Welsh. “With positive leadership and determination, our women will
have a chance to be competitive this season.”
The Cardinals have three team captains, who will show the way for the rest of
the team. Junior Tiffany Estes will
lead the field events; junior Amy Winter, the sprints; and senior Amy Davin, the
distance events. Winter competes in
a wide variety of events, including sprints, jumps, hurdles and relays.
One key returnee is sophomore Libby Hoffman, who was OAC champion in the
55-meter hurdles and competed in that event at the NCAA Championships in
Wisconsin-Whitewater. She was also
runner-up in the 55 meters at the OAC Championships last year.
“The OAC will once again be strong and balanced on both the men’s and
women’s sides,” Welsh said. “I
see quality personnel and good coaching everywhere I look in the conference.
I have no doubt that it will be an exciting year for OAC track and field
in 2005.”
Otterbein will open the 2005 campaign at Capital on Jan. 15, and then will
host the Cardinal Invitational on Jan. 22.

Shoot for 4th Straight OAC Title
(written by Justin Milam 05/12/04)
Otterbein will look to defend its Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) outdoor
title this weekend when they head to Heidelberg College in Tiffin for the
conference championships. This
could be the Cardinals’ fourth-consecutive conference championship, dating
back to last season’s indoor title.
During the indoor season, Otterbein captured the team title by 24.5 points
over runner-up Ohio Northern University.
Otterbein leads a well-balanced attack in field, distance, sprint and hurdle
events. Many of the Cardinals are
currently ranked among the top five in their respective events.
Senior All-America thrower Erika Waickman leads the field event performers
and will compete in the shot, discus and javelin. She was selected
“most valuable field events performer” at the 2003 outdoor championships by
winning both the shot and discus, and placing second in the javelin.
Classmate Molly Winter will join her in the shot and discus, and sophomore
Crystal Burnett will provide support in the shot.
The Cardinals have two of the top pole vaulters in the OAC in freshman
Alysha Gossel and sophomore Dana Ullman. Ullman won the event last year at
Baldwin-Wallace.
The Cardinals will run three of the top hurdlers in the conference, each
having an equal chance of winning the title.
They include senior Melanie Ridgway, and freshmen Libby Hoffman and Kelli
Pierano. Hoffman will also compete
in the 100 meters; and Ridgway in the long and triple jumps.
In the distance races, All-America junior Kim Allen will look for victories
in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and 800 meters.
Juniors and sisters Jennifer and Susanne Lynch hope to score well in the
1,500 and 5,000 meters.
The relay races could provide the key to victory for the Cardinals. Otterbein
has the second-best time in the OAC in the 400-meter relay, and the third-best
time in the 1600-meter relay. Otterbein could win the 3200-meter relay.
On
Friday, the field events get underway at 1 p.m. and the running events start at
4:15 p.m. On Saturday, the field
events begin at 10 a.m. and the running events at 1:25 p.m.

Kim Allen, a sophomore from Westerville North, earned All-America status
after she placed fourth overall in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA
Division III National Championships at St. Lawrence University (NY) Friday.
Allen led the first half of the race, but then fell back to fourth place.
She finished in 10:50.57, half a second in front of fifth place.
“I went out aggressive and then lost a little steam towards the end of the
race,” Allen said. “I
wouldn’t have run it any different. I
was scared of getting in the back and just letting the race go. So I got into
the lead early.”
Jenn Campbell, a sophomore from Williams College, finished first overall in
an NCAA meet record time of 10:33.67. Conference
rival Baldwin-Wallace placed two runners in the top six, including runner-up
senior Jessica Textoris.
“It was fun running and having the B-W girls there,” Allen said.
“I thought it was awesome that three girls from the OAC placed in the
steeple top ten at nationals.”
“The meet was big and intimidating, but a worthwhile experience,” Allen
added. “It makes you want to
train hard in hopes of getting there again next year.”

She is the school record holder, and when she competes this weekend, it
will be just her fourth time running the event.
“I was really surprised about how I ran last weekend at B-W
(Baldwin-Wallace), especially since I have only run it twice this season,”
Allen said. “I was just more
aggressive with the barriers and the weather was perfect for me.
I am looking forward to competing this weekend, it will be fun and an
honor.”
Allen earned All-America status during the indoor season for her eighth-place
finish in the 800m run.
"It's always a positive thing to have individuals in your program who
have a possible opportunity to compete at the national level," said
Otterbein head coach Doug Welsh.
Waickman will compete Thursday afternoon in the discus and Allen will race
Friday night at St. Lawrence University. Spring
and May will race their preliminaries Friday night, and will compete Saturday
afternoon if they reach the finals.

go Unbeaten--Win first OAC Outdoor Title
(written by Jason Erickson 5/10/03)
Otterbein claimed its first-ever Ohio Athletic
Conference (OAC) outdoor title in women's track and field Saturday afternoon in Berea.
Otterbein tallied 184.5 team points, outscoring host Baldwin-Wallace, who
finished in second place with 163 points.
The Cardinals rewrote the record books, finishing the track and field season
with both indoor and outdoor conference titles. The squad also made school
history by going through the indoor and outdoor seasons without ever taking less than a
first-place finish--an amazing feat according to Otterbein head coach Doug
Welsh.
"What they did this season is unbelievable," Welsh said."
These young women were amazing. They competed every single week and rose to
every challenge. A lot of credit has to be given to my assistant coaches. Our
coaches work so hard and spend so much time to help each of our athletes."
Otterbein won five individual titles. Erika Waickman (Mantua/Crestwood) won
OAC titles in both the discus and shot put. Dana Ullman (Columbus/Worthington
Kilbourne) finished first in the pole vault. Distance runner Kim Allen
(Westerville/North) brought home the 1500-meters title and sprinter Misty Spring
(Delaware/Olentangy) won the 400-meter dash. Spring broke the OAC championship
record with a time of 56.45 seconds, breaking the old record of 56.47 set by Benita
Thomas of Baldwin-Wallace in 1990. Spring's record provisionally qualifies
her for the NCAA Division III championships.
Waickman was named OAC most valuable field event performer and coach Welsh
was named OAC coach of the year.
"It means so much to see our women succeed like this today," Welsh
said. "It's such a privilege to work with such amazing student-athletes. I
enjoy seeing them work hard and achieve their goals. It's such a long hard
season for them. They are fierce competitors and what they have done will not be
forgotten for a long time to come. What a great day."
On
Track or Off--Markita Excels
(written by Jason Erickson 4/29/03)
Whether it’s in the classroom or on the track, Markita May is ahead of the
competition.
May, a senior life science major from Columbus (Hamilton Township High
School) has been chosen as Otterbein’s nominee for the Clyde Lamb award. The
award is given to one female and one male athlete in the Ohio Athletic
Conference (OAC) for academic excellence.
“I didn’t expect to be nominated at all,” May said. “There are so
many deserving athletes at our school. I am just honored to be chosen.”
In the classroom, May carries a 3.813 grade-point average and has already
been accepted to Wright State’s medical school in the fall.
“I want to become a pediatrician,” May said. “It’s something that I
have always known I wanted to do since I was little. I love science and I love
kids. I just put the two together, and being a pediatrician sounds perfect.”
The youngest of five sisters, the senior hurdler says that she is the “odd
ball” in the family.
“I am the only athlete in the family,” May said. “My sisters are all
girly girls. It’s like having four older moms, but it’s fun because they
push me and they get excited about what I am doing. It’s nice to have their
support. I know how proud they are of me.”
Athletically, May runs the indoor 50-meter hurdles and outdoor 100-meter
hurdles. She ran to a school-record 8.44 seconds in the 50-meters earlier this
year and also broke the school record in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of
14.64 seconds just a week ago.
“She is an amazing athlete,” head coach Doug Welsh said. “Markita is a
tremendous example of the Division III student-athlete. She is successful on and
off the track. We’re lucky to have her.”
May, one of the top hurdle runners in all of NCAA Division III, finished the
indoor track and field season as an All-American, running at the national
championships in March. May was also named All-OAC after finishing second at the
OAC indoor championships. She finished the indoor season with five first-place
finishes, helping her team to the OAC championship.
Already with two first-place finishes in the 100-meter hurdles this season,
May hopes to finish the outdoor season by winning at the OAC outdoor
championships at Baldwin-Wallace May 9-10. But more importantly, she said, will
be how well her team does.
“I want our team to win,” May said. “The most important thing is how
well our team does. This is a team sport and we run for each other.”
May says that balancing her studies and excelling athletically comes with a
price, but one that she has been more than willing to pay.
“You have to be dedicated,” she said. “I love competing and I think
that filters into my studies as well. It’s become part of who I am. I love
running, but know that it isn’t going to be my life, so I have studied hard to
try and do something that I will enjoy for the rest of my life.”
The Clyde Lamb nominees will be honored at a dinner May 12. Whether May
receives the award or not, coach Welsh said Otterbein has been very fortunate to
have May.
“She is one of the all-time greats in Otterbein track and field history,”
Welsh said. “She has done an amazing job of balancing her studies and
athletics. She has been an outstanding captain and leader for our team. She has
great days ahead of her and will help thousands of people in her life. We are
proud to have had her on our team.”

Win Again--Unbeaten in Spring
(written by Justin Milam 4/22/03)
Otterbein ended Baldwin-Wallace’s streak of seven straight All-Ohio titles
by edging past the Yellow Jackets by two points, 116-114, this past weekend at
Ohio Wesleyan. The All-Ohio
featured 18 NCAA Division III Ohio schools, providing excellent competition.
Senior Misty Spring (Delaware/Olentangy) led the way with three runner-up
performances. Spring finished
second in the 400m (57.03), 200m (25.66) and long jump (17-11).
Her times in the 400m and 200m were both school records; and her time in
the 400 provisionally qualifies her for the NCAA Championships. She holds the
tenth-fastest 400 time in NCAA Division III this season.
Sophomore Kim Allen (Westerville/North) set an All-Ohio meet and school
record in the 1500m (4:38.26), which provisionally qualifies her for the
NCAA’s. She ranks 11th nationally in the 1500.
Allen also placed fifth in the 800m (2:21.05).
The Otterbein throwers once again proved their dominance by placing three in
both the shot put and discus. Senior
Cindy King (Lima/Perry) placed fourth in the discus (126-2) and fifth in the
shot put (40-9 3/4). Junior Molly Winter (Westerville/Big Walnut) placed fifth
in the discus (125-11) and third in the shot put (40-11).
Junior Erica Waickman (Mantua/Crestwood) placed seventh in the discus
(123-1), fourth in the shot put (40-11) and fourth in the javelin (114-7).
Senior captain Markita May (Columbus/Hamilton Township) was runner-up in the
100m hurdles (15.29). Freshmen Dana
Ullman (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) was runner-up in the pole vault (10-0)
and Cathy Thompson (Hilliard/Davidson) placed third in the 800m (2:19.04).
Sophomore Jennifer Lynch (Englewood/Northmont) placed fifth in the 1500m
(4:55.77).
“It was just an awesome feeling coming out on top for both women and
men,” May said. “Our track
teams have not only incredible athletes, but incredible competitors, and
everyone keeps improving each week.”
The men’s team squeaked past Mount Union to win the meet by half a point,
marking the first time in school history that Otterbein has won both the men’s
and women’s titles at the All-Ohio.
Otterbein will host a pair of qualifying meets Wednesday and Saturday in
Memorial Stadium. Ashland University will make an appearance Wednesday and Ohio
State University will visit Saturday.

“I think our team performed pretty well considering the competition we were
up against, mainly the NCAA D-I schools, which helped us to compete better and
continue to improve,” said freshman sprinter Carrie Mazza (Worthington/Thomas
Worthington). “The veterans
showed and paved the way on how an outdoor track meet should be run, and
certainly helped the underclassmen.”
Two Cardinals Named All-America
(written by Jason Erickson 3/15/03)
Two
members of Otterbein’s track and field team have been named All-America after
competing in the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday
and Saturday at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind.
Senior
Markita May (Columbus/Hamilton Township) finished seventh in the 55-meter
hurdles Saturday with a time of 8.53 seconds. May broke her own school record
(8.47) in the qualifying heat on Friday with a time of 8.44 seconds.
"It
sure went a lot better than I expected," May said. "It was so exciting
to make it into the finals. I ran the fastest time I had ever run in the
preliminaries, and to make it to the final and finish seventh was amazing.
Making All-America and standing up on that podium was a humbling experience.
It's a great way to end my indoor track and field career."
Sophomore
Kim Allen (Westerville/North) finished eighth in the final of the
800-meter race. Allen finished with a time of 2:19.56 in Saturday’s finale.
She qualified on Friday with a time of 2:15.37.
"Coming
into the nationals, I didn't think I would do as well as I did," Allen
said. "I felt good during the preliminary race and was excited to make it
to the finals. I got pushed around a lot during the finals race, which I felt
hurt my rhythm, but to just finish as an All-American was great."
Despite
suffering a hamstring pull, Tyran
Thompson (Middleton/Middleton) ran in the 55-meter dash in Friday’s qualifying
race, finishing with a time of 6.52 seconds.
"I'm
so proud of all three of our athletes that ran," said head coach Doug
Welsh. "It is a testament of all their hard work and dedication to the
sport. It is an outstanding accomplishment to finish as an
All-American."
Cards Gear Up for NCAA Indoor Championships
(written by Jason Erickson 3/12/03)
Three members of Otterbein’s track and field team have qualified to compete
in the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships scheduled for
Friday and Saturday at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind.
The three qualifiers include senior Markita May (Columbus/Hamilton Township),
55-meter hurdles; sophomore Kim Allen (Westerville/North), 800-meter run; and
freshman Tyran Thompson (Middleton/Middleton), 55-meter dash.
“It’s a real testament to the work ethic of our program,” said head
coach Doug Welsh. “We are so proud of them. Their hard work, dedication and
desire have put them in the championships.”
May set the school-record in the 55-meter hurdles earlier this season with a
time of 8.47 seconds. It is the tenth fastest time in the NCAA Division III this
season.
“It’s exciting to be able to compete at such a high level,” May said.
“Being a senior, my goal was to make nationals, and to see all of my hard work
pay off is really great.”
Thompson, who won the individual Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) indoor titles
in the 55m and the long jump this season, heads into the weekend with the
nation’s sixth-fastest time in the 55m (6.41). Just a freshman, Thompson says
he is not intimidated by the caliber of competition he will see at the
championships.
“I feel great,” Thompson said.” “There is absolutely no pressure on
me. I am just going to go out and run my race. I am only a freshman and have
nothing to lose. I’m just happy to be going and will enjoy it.”
Allen ran the nation’s fourth-best time in the 800m (2:14.48c). She ran her
way to OAC titles in the 1000- and 1500-meter runs this season. Allen attributes
her success to working harder in the off-season.
“I put in more miles and it has paid off for me,” Allen said. “It’s
so exciting to go to the championships and see all your hard work get you
somewhere. I just wish the whole team was going with us. I am actually kind of
nervous to be going up against such elite competition. Hopefully, I can just
shake off the nerves and run my race.”
“What you have to realize is that each of these three athletes is
team-oriented,” Welsh said. “Each of them has utilized every gift they have
been given to the fullest. That is why they are able to compete at the national
level. They are each special athletes. I am so happy for them.”
May, Thompson and Allen helped Otterbein make school history as both the
men’s and women’s teams won indoor titles at the OAC Championships.
“I just want to go and have fun,” May said about the national meet.
“One thing I have learned is that you’ve got to have fun. I’ve been having
fun all year. It’s just an awesome feeling to be able to compete at the
national level. I am so excited.”

Sends Three to NCAA'S
(written by Ed Syguda 3/11/03)
Three members of the Otterbein men’s and
women’s track and field teams have qualified for the NCAA Division III Indoor
Track and Field Championships scheduled for Friday and Saturday at DePauw
University in Greencastle, Ind.
The three competing are: Markita May, a senior
from Columbus (Hamilton Township High School), in the 55-meter hurdles; Kim
Allen, a sophomore from Westerville (North), in the 800-meter run; and Tyran
Thompson, a freshman from Middletown, in the 55-meter dash.
All three set school records in their event
this season.
Thompson, who won individual Ohio Athletic
Conference (OAC) indoor titles in the 55m and long jump this season, heads into
the weekend with the nation’s sixth-fastest time in the 55m (6.41).
Allen holds the nation’s fourth-best time in
the 800m (2:14.48c). She took OAC indoor titles in the 1000- and 1500-meter runs
this year.
May is ranked tenth with a time of 8.47 in the
hurdles. She finished second to Ohio Northern’s Jackie Dight at the conference
meet.
Otterbein
made school history by winning both the men’s and women’s indoor titles at
the OAC championships held Feb. 28 to March 1 at Baldwin-Wallace.
Thirteenth-year head coach Doug Welsh, who coaches both the men’s and
women’s teams, was named men’s and women’s “OAC Coach of the Year” for

OAC
RANKINGS
At the 2002 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Indoor Track and Field
Championships, Otterbein fell just four points short of Baldwin-Wallace for the
team title. It was B-W’s 15th
straight OAC title, continuing one of the longest conference winning streaks in
the entire nation.
Baldwin-Wallace shoots for number 16 as it hosts both the men’s and
women’s conference championships this weekend. Otterbein could challenge. The
Cardinals edged Baldwin-Wallace for the team title earlier this season at the
Sparky Adams Invite hosted by B-W.
“It will be a very tough environment at B-W this weekend, and it is a real
plus to have veteran people who have been in tough situations before to the lead
the team,” said Otterbein head coach Doug Welsh. “I feel one of our main
strengths is the experience of our upper-class athletes.”
Some of the veterans Welsh will rely on are defending OAC champions:
sophomore Kim Allen (Westerville/North) in the mid-distance races and senior
Cindy King (Lima/Perry) in the shot put. Seniors Misty Spring (Delaware/Olentangy)
and Markita May (Columbus/Hamilton Township) and junior Melanie Ridgway
(Dennison/Central Catholic) lead the sprints, hurdles and jumps.
The Cardinals will need help from the underclassmen in order to come home
with a team championship. Freshmen
Adrienne Davie (Sandusky/Sandusky) and Dana Ullman (Columbus/Worthington
Kilbourne) both sit high in the OAC rankings in the high jump and pole vault.
“It will be a monumental task at the OAC Championships, but I am sure our
teams will compete as hard as they can,” continued Welsh.
“I’ll be happy with that.”
On Friday, the field events get underway at 2:30 p.m. and the running events
start at 5:20 p.m. On Saturday, the field events begin at 10 a.m. and the
running events at 1:45 p.m.

Sets Record in the 800m Relay
(written by Justin Milam 2/24/03)
Otterbein competed at the Greater Columbus D-III Invitational held at Denison
on Saturday. The unscored meet
featured six schools from the surrounding Columbus area:
Otterbein, Wilmington, Ohio Wesleyan, Capital, Denison and Kenyon.
Had the meet been scored, the Cardinals would have finished second, a few
points behind Denison.
The 4 x 200m relay team placed second and set a new indoor school record
(1:48.38), shaving a few hundredths of a second off the previous mark. The four
members of the relay team include seniors Markita May (Columbus/Hamilton
Township) and Misty Spring (Delaware/Olentangy), junior Melanie Ridgway
(Dennison/Central Catholic), and freshman Amy Winter (Westerville/Big Walnut)
May won the 55m hurdles (8.59) in an NCAA provisional-qualifying time. Ridgway won the long jump (16-3 1/2) and Winter placed second
in the 300m (43.92).
Freshman Cathy Thompson (Hilliard/Davidson) had an impressive day, finishing
second in the 800m (2:22.05) and third in the 1500m (4:56.51).
Classmate Dana Ullman (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) tied her own
school record in the pole vault for the fourth straight week, winning the event
(9-6).
The meet was a good tune-up in preparation of the Ohio Athletic Conference
(OAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships, scheduled for this weekend at
Baldwin-Wallace. On Friday, the
field events get underway at 2:30 p.m. and the running events start at 5:20 p.m. On Saturday, the field events begin at 10 a.m. and the
running events at 1:45 p.m.
Last season, the Cardinals finished second in a five-team battle for the
championship. Baldwin Wallace edged
Otterbein by four points to claim the crown.

Resumes Rivalry with B-W

The rivalry between Otterbein and Baldwin-Wallace continues to heat up.
At the 2002 OAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, B-W took the crown by
13 points. Then at the outdoor
conference championships, B-W once again edged Otterbein by four points.
In the most recent meeting, last Friday in Berea, the Cardinals edged the
Yellow Jackets by 4.75 points to win the Sparky Adams Invitational.
Otterbein tallied 173.75 points while the Yellow Jackets scored 169.
Finishing the standings were Wilmington (70), Muskingum (61.25) and John
Carroll (9).
“We made a lot of progress at B-W,” said Otterbein head coach Doug Welsh.
“It is still early in the season, but if we keep stepping up our level
and continue to improve each week, we should be in good shape for conference.
I am pleased with the field events and the middle distance groups.”
Freshman Dana Ullman (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) established a new
school record in the pole vault with a jump of 9-6.
In the shot put, junior Erika Waickman (Mantua/Crestwood), senior Cindy
King (Lima/Perry), and junior Molly Winter (Westerville/Big Walnut) finished
second (40-2 3/4), third (39-4 1/4), and fifth (37), respectively.
Senior Markita May (Columbus/Hamilton Township) and junior Melanie Ridgway
(Dennison/Central Catholic) each pulled off amazing triples of their own.
May won both the 55m hurdles (8.79) and long jump (16-5 1/2), and placed
second in the triple jump (33-5 1/4). Ridgway
won the triple jump (34-3/4), and finished second in both the 55m hurdles (9.45)
and long jump (16-4 3/4).
“Misty Spring (Delaware/Olentangy), Kim Allen (Westerville/North) and
Meghan Randolph (Pickerington/Pickerington) all ran really well this weekend,”
said Otterbein assistant coach Ryan Borland. “I thought we battled hard. This
was a good meet for us.”
Spring won the 400m (59.69), Allen won both the 500m (1:21.68) and 1000m
(3:08.64), and Randolph finished fourth in the 5000m (19:23).
With her two victories, Allen remained unbeaten in the 500m and 1000m.
“This was a step forward in the right direction for both teams,” Welsh
said.
The next step the Cardinals will take comes Friday when they host their own
invitational in the Clements Center. The
meet begins at 6 p.m. Teams
competing include Wilmington, Denison, Muskingum, Capital and Ohio Wesleyan.
