Head Coach Ryan Borland

Ryan Borland begins his seventh season as head men's and women's cross country coach for the Cardinals.

Borland was named OAC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year for the third time in his career in 2004, leading his team to a second-straight OAC championship and a third-place finish at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional—just missing qualification for the NCAA Championships by one team place. Borland was also named OAC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2000.

In addition, Borland led the women’s team to a second-place finish at the 2004 OAC Championships. In 2003, he guided the women's team to its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III Women’s Cross Country Championship following third-place finishes in both the Great Lakes Regional and OAC Championship.

Borland ran for Otterbein from 1994-97, and was a member of two NCAA qualifying teams, including the team that placed eighth in the nation in 1994.  He currently holds the tenth fastest 10,000 meters time in school history (31:52).

He graduated in 1997 with a bachelor's in education, and currently teaches history at Genoa Middle School in Westerville.  Borland is married to Heather Borland, who is an assistant coach in track and field.  The Borland's have a daughter, Colbi, 4, and son, Cale, 1, and live in Galena.

Assistant Coach Dave Lehman

photo of Assistant Coach Dave LehmanDave Lehman enters his 37th season working with the cross country team, as he took the program over in 1970.  He has brought national prominence throughout his time at Otterbein.

He has led the Cardinals to seven Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) cross country championships, and his men's teams have finished in the top three every year since 1979.

His 1994 team placed eighth in the nation, and finished 17th in the nation the following year.  Lehman has coached four All-Americans in cross country and five in track and field, including five-time All-American Tom Schnurr, who graduated in 1988.

He works with the men's distance squad during the indoor and outdoor track seasons.

He graduated in 1970 from Otterbein with a bachelor's in business and math, and owns Culver Art and Frame Company in Lewis Center.  He and his wife, Claudia, have three children and live on the edge of the Otterbein campus.  Their son, Ben, is a senior member of the cross country team.
