Head Coach Doug Welsh

Doug Welsh begins his eighteenth season as head varsity track and field coach at Otterbein College.

Coach Welsh, a ten-time Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) and three-time All-Great Lakes Region Track and Field Coach of the Year selection, heads both the men’s and women’s programs at Otterbein College. Welsh guided the 2007 women’s team to its third OAC indoor championship and third outdoor championship.

Welsh led Otterbein to a clean sweep during the 2004 season. The men’s and women’s squads combined for four OAC team titles, winning both the indoor and outdoor conference championships. During the 2003 season, the women’s team captured both the indoor and outdoor OAC titles while the men’s team won the indoor conference crown and finished second at the outdoor meet.

This marks Welsh’s 40th year of coaching. He taught and coached at the high school level at Van Wert and Reynoldsburg, Ohio. He spent six years at Earlham College in Indiana before returning to the Columbus area where he grew up.  Welsh earned eight varsity letters as a collegiate athlete at Muskingum College.

Welsh’s son, Scott, runs the junior tennis program at the Wedgewood Golf and Country Club in Columbus. His daughter, Amy, son-in-law, Brian, and grandson, Logan,  live in Chicago.

Dave Lehman, who works primarily with distance runners, has brought national prominence to Otterbein over his 30 years as men’s varsity cross country coach (1970-1999). He led Otterbein to seven Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) championships (1980, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1992, 1994 and 1995), and into the NCAA Championships ten times. His 1994 team finished eighth in the nation, and his 1995 squad took 17th place. He’s coached four All-Americas in cross country and five in track and field.

He graduated in 1970 from Otterbein with a bachelor’s degree in business and math, and owns Culver Art and Frame Company in Lewis Center.  He and his wife, Claudia, have three children and live on the edge of the Otterbein campus.  Their son, Ben, is a senior member of the Otterbein cross country and track and field teams.

Ryan Borland, who enters his 11th season as an assistant coach in track and field at Otterbein, also serves as head men’s and women’s cross country coach, a position he has held since 2000.

He works with the women’s distance squad and the long hurdlers during the indoor and outdoor track seasons.

Borland was selected 2004 “OAC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year” after leading his team to a second-straight OAC title and a third-place finish at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional, just one team place away from qualifying for the NCAA meet.

This is the third time he has earned that honor. Borland was selected men’s coach of the year in 2003 and 2000.  In 2003, Borland led the men’s team to the conference championship and a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional. Also in 2003, Borland led the women’s team to the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships, a first for the women’s program.

Borland ran for Otterbein from 1994-97, and was a member of two NCAA qualifying teams, including the team that placed eighth in the nation in 1994.  He currently holds the tenth fastest 10,000 meters time in school history (31:52).

Scott McCleary begins his eighth season as an assistant coach. He works with the hurdlers.

McCleary coached Otterbein’s first female indoor track All-America, Markita May, who finished seventh in the 55-meter hurdles at the 2003 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships.

A 1993 graduate of Otterbein, McCleary was a member of the 1990 squad, which captured the school’s first and only OAC men’s championship in outdoor track and field. A three-time OAC champion in the 110-meter high hurdles, he qualified for the NCAA Championships. He served as captain three seasons (1991-93).

Brian Brillon begins his fourth year as an assistant coach. He works with the long jump and triple jump athletes.

A 1999 graduate of Otterbein, Brillon earned a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training and was a four year lettermen on the track and field team.

Brillon began his coaching career at Worthington Christian High School where he spent six seasons coaching the sprinters, jumpers, and relay teams. He led four individuals to six district championships in the long jump, including one regional champion, one state champion, and a 7th–place finish at the state championship. Brillon has obtained a Level II coaching certification through the USATF in jumps, relays, sprints and hurdles, and is a certified NSCA personal trainer.

After graduating from Otterbein, Brillon obtained degrees in Sports and Fitness Management and another in Massage Therapy. He is also a licensed massage therapist by the Ohio State Medical Board.

Assistant Coach John Lintz

John Lintz enters his fourth season as an assistant coach. He works with the men’s and women’s pole vaulters and javelin throwers.

A 2005 Otterbein graduate, Lintz competed on the track and field team from 2000-02. After suffering an injury, he went on to coach two years at the high school level before returning to his alma mater.

Lintz has coached multiple conference champions at Otterbein, two NCAA qualifiers, two All-Americas and one national champion.

Lintz, who is serving as a graduate assistant while working on his master’s degree in Education here at Otterbein, is married to former Otterbein track standout and graduate, Susanne Lynch.
 

Assistant Coach Andy Johnson

Andy Johnson begins his fourth season as an assistant coach. He works with the men’s and women’s high jumpers.

A 2000 Otterbein graduate, Johnson was a four-year lettermen and holds the school record in the high jump (6-10 3/4) and the two-man high jump relay. Johnson was an eight-time national qualifier, six-time national participant, and earned All-America honors twice.

During Johnson’s first year at Otterbein he coached Bill Myers and Mike Perinne to the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the high jump. He also helped Myers earn All-American honors at the 2005 NCAA Indoor Championships.

Assistant Coach Molly Busic

Molly Busic begins her third season as an assistant coach. She works with the throwers.

A 2004 Otterbein graduate, Busic earned four letters in track and field and holds the school’s third-best shot put (42-1 3/4) and fourth-best discus throw (134-2).

Busic earned All-OAC honors placing third in the shot put at the 2004 OAC Outdoor Championships and earned fourth in both the shot put and discus at the 2003 OAC Outdoor Championships.
