Black Studies Program

Otterbein College is proud to offer a minor in Black Studies.

Photo of students in a classroomIs Black Studies just for African Americans?
Black Studies is for everyone!

We use the definition of Black offered by Dr. Linda James Myers, namely that the physical color black includes all colors of the spectrum. We use the image of the baobab tree because it can shelter and nurture all who choose to sit beneath its branches. We encourage you to consider the African diaspora as part of a global perspective.

The Black Experience and Civil Rights Movements have been templates for many other ethnic and social groups in the United States and abroad. You can apply the lessons of social justice and global citizenship found in the discipline of Black Studies to many peoples. Study with us and learn to change the world!

I want to know more about Black Studies but will it help me get a job?
People with degrees in Black Studies have found employment as artists, attorneys, counselors, criminologists, community liaison officers, employment counselors, corporate and government relations officers, human rights advocates, insurance examiners, market researchers, ministers, nurses, physicians, police officers, social service workers, sports managers, teachers, urban planners, writers, and more. You can earn a Master's degree and a Doctorate in the field of Black Studies.

A Black Studies perspective enhances all majors. Having this minor will allow you to inform future employers that you have extra skill sets that will be useful to the company.

I do not have many electives in my major. How can I find room in my schedule for these courses?
Some courses are approved substitutions for Integrative Studies courses. Be certain to sign up for the correct section of the course. These courses are: HIST 261, SOCL 260, and ENGL 230.
