Otterbein College jazz ensembles will present their sixth annual Valentine's gala event, Music and Romance, at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, at the Makoy Center, 5462 Center St., Hilliard. The event will combine romantic jazz, swing dancing, and gourmet desserts in an elegant, candlelit setting.
Otterbein's Opus One vocal jazz and Big Band ensembles will feature music of the "Big Band" era. Vocal and instrumental soloists from the Department of Music will also perform. A dance floor will be available to guests.
Opus One is one of seven vocal ensembles at Otterbein College. The 16-voice ensemble specializes in vocal jazz and a cappella music in the tradition of The Manhatten Transfer and The New York Voices. The Otterbein Big Band consists of the traditional big band instrumentation, performing music from all jazz eras.
Music and Romance is a fundraising event sponsored by the Otterbein chapter of the international honorary music fraternity Delta Omicron. Ticket revenues will be placed in an assistance fund for Otterbein students who plan to tour abroad with college ensembles. To date, the fundraiser has raised over $10,000. The event will include a silent auction and 50/50 raffle and drawings for Valentine prizes, such as free dinners at area restaurants and tickets to concerts and cultural events.
Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the performance begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for students. Tables of ten will be offered a discounted rate of $200. For more information, call the Otterbein College Department of Music at (614) 823-1508.
