OTTERBEIN COLLEGE TUBIST TO PERFORM FACULTY RECITAL

The Otterbein College Department of Music will present a faculty tuba recital by Michael DiCuirci at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 22, in the Church of the Master United Methodist, 24 N. Grove St., Westerville. Guest musicians will include percussionist Patrick O'Donnell and saxophonist Chet Jenkins. The concert is free and open to the public.

The recital will present two contemporary compositions for tuba and percussion: Duo Fantasia for tuba, vibraphone and mixed percussion, and Brillenbass by Thomas Read, which contrasts the deep mellow tone of the tuba with the brilliant and sharp sounds of celesta and cymbals.

The concert will also feature an unusual performance of a Bach canon, with the right hand of the canon played by marimba while the left hand is played by tuba-two instruments that were not invented or accepted into the classical tradition until hundreds of years after Bach's death.

The final section of the concert will feature music for tuba, mallet percussion and alto saxophone, including Bernhard Heiden's Four Fancies and arrangements of Lee Morgan's Ceora and Gershwin's Summertime.
