OTTERBEIN COLLEGE CONCERT CHOIR CELEBRATES MAYNARD AVENUE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH CENTENNIAL

The Otterbein College Concert Choir will perform a festive concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8, at Maynard Avenue United Methodist Church, 2350 Indianola Ave., Columbus. The concert, celebrating the centennial anniversary of the church, is free and open to the public.

The program will feature sacred masterworks, including works by William Byrd, Domenick Argento, and Franz Joseph Haydn. It is the first performance of the Concert Choir’s 2009-2010 season. In December, the choir will tour throughout the southeast, including performances in Louisville, KY; Nashville, TN; Atlanta, GA; Bluffton, SC; Charleston, SC; Corryton, TN; Lebanon, OH; and Westerville, OH.

Otterbein College, a four-year liberal arts college founded by the Methodist Church, is located in Westerville, OH. The college is consistently ranked among the top of the Midwest’s regional liberal arts institutions by U.S. News and World Report.

The Concert Choir is the most select of the college’s seven vocal ensembles. Most of its 50 members are Music and Music Theatre majors who study voice privately. The Concert Choir tours every December to destinations both domestic and abroad. The choir has performed at prestigious locations such as Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna, and St. Nicholas Church in Prague. The ensemble frequently performs at professional conferences, most recently for the Ohio Music Educators Association in 2007 and the Central Division Conference of the American Choral Directors Association in 2008.

Conductor Gayle Walker is in her tenth year as Director of Choral Activities and Associate Professor of Music at Otterbein College. She has performed as a guest conductor, pianist, and vocal recitalist throughout the Midwest, and she is also an experienced clinician and adjudicator.
