OTTERBEIN DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC UPCOMING PERFORMANCES

Faculty Recital Series Presents Michael Haberkorn, Harpsichord, and Friends

The Otterbein College Department of Music will present a faculty recital by Michael Haberkorn of Westerville (43081) and friends at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at the Battelle Fine Arts Center’s Riley Auditorium, 170 W. Park St. in Westerville. This program is free and open to the public.

Haberkorn will be joined by Otterbein faculty members Jim Bates of Columbus (43205), Kimberlee Goodman of Columbus (43220) and others in a concert celebrating the memory of harpsichordist Wanda Landowska. Landowska was responsible for the revival and return to concert life of the largely abandoned harpsichord during the first half of the 20th century. She performed on personally commissioned copies of this instrument on the concert stage, in films, and in recordings. Her one-woman crusade brought forth a new generation of interest for this Baroque keyboard instrument.

The French baroque harpsichord that will be used in this the concert was created by the late Benjamin Bechtel of Columbus, a well-know builder of early instruments, and was given to the Department of Music by the late Jo Ann Ball of Worthington, an Otterbein music alumna.

The program will also include selections from the partitas of J.S. Bach, Suites of G.F. Handel, and chamber music including Sonatas by C.P.E. Bach. For more information, call 614-823-1508.

Westerville Symphony celebrates the “Romantic Cello”

The Westerville Symphony at Otterbein College will commence their 27th season with the first of three performances in the Ron Lykins Masterworks at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 22, in the Fritsche Theatre at Cowan Hall, 30 S. Grove St., Westerville.

Music Director Peter Stafford Wilson will lead the 84 member ensemble in an evening of music by the composers Torke, Strauss and Elgar. This concert, entitled “The Romantic Cello,” features three symphonic works that showcase the full range of musical emotion: Michael Torke’s delightful Javelin; Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche by Richard Strauss; and cellist Scott Kluksdahl’s performance of Edward Elgar’s bittersweet showpiece Cello Conceto in e minor, op. 85, one of the most famous works in cello repertoire. A California native, Kluksdahl will spend the week in rehearsals with the Symphony and will participate in clinics with Otterbein student musicians.

Tickets are available by visiting www.westervillesymphony.org, or calling 614-899-9000. Tickets will also be available at the door, and are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $8 for students.
